My wife doesn't work and I make just a little over 50k a year, we live a very easy middle class life. I have 2 cars, own my home, and we have no financial issues, and my wife is in college.

1 income is still very much a viable living option today. It just isn't in areas like San Francisco where rent is 2k a month for a tiny apartment.

What about it has changed so drastically?

The average family wanting the latest and greatest (within reason) during the 70s and 80s was able to mostly achieve that one with person working in the household. They weren't living like millionaires in mansions, but they were to able to afford a middle class lifestyle with the amenities available during that time period.

If they want the exact same thing now, both parents need to be working---in general.

And many still don't at that. Saying poor people have a higher standard of living than a middle class family in the 70s because they are able to own a technology that didn't exist in the 70s and that has also been out on the market for 10+ years is not that impressive.

They still live in a dump, have little to no savings, and can't afford to fly their family halfway across the country once or twice a year for a week long vacation--and both the mom and father work (or don't depending on how much government assistance they're getting).

I can agree with that. Poor people probably have it better today than they did 40 years ago.

But someone above earlier said poor people today have a (noticeably) higher standard of living than a middle class family in the 70s/80s and I would have to disagree with that for the reasons I've previously mentioned.
