Call the restaurant and think they'll give back my $5? The place I went to was on a trip about 1 hour and a half away so going there is a bit out of the question. Something legal I can do?

Exactly. You tip people that give you good service. You don't tip people that give you bad service. It's not hard to understand.

He could just take this as a lesson and move on. Any way he tries to get the money back would probably cost more than the money itself.

I put a dash line on the tip section and put the total amount as exact amount charged below it. There was no room for confusion. This was theft.

This is bad advice.

I'd see if they are on Yelp and leave that in a review.

Then call the restaurant and tell them that.

Did you take your copy of the receipt?

Also, was the service inadequate? If not, I'd still leave a very negative review but wouldnt pursue 5 bucks.

I just would never visit that establishment again. Or if it's a chain, any other locations.

I mean, what the restaurant did is blatantly illegal and he has a right to contest it.

TC if you have a receipt I'd talk to the restaurant directly first. Or even without one. In my experience restaurants are run by spineless cowards that will buckle to your whims if you complain enough

It's not bad advice, IMO. Far too many times I've had people skim my card. Or even heard about someone it's happened to. I had someone at Burger King buy shit on Amazon with my card when there was a "technical problem" with my card and she had to take it to the back

I always pay cash and leave my debit and credit stuff for things that need it like automatically paying my bills or buying something that costs a lot so I can build up my credit.

Also, machines go down, so I always have and pay with cash for most things I buy at a store.

At the bare minimum, I would call up the restaurant and demand to speak with a manager.

Similar thing happened to me some months ago when I returned a rental car. I filled the gas tank up right before I dropped it off, however after some days I saw a charge on my credit card for the amount of what I thought was a full tank of gas (the tank was just under 50% full when I topped it off).

Luckily I had my receipt, so I called them up and demanded they remove the charge on my card (they did).

When I get takeout instead of dine-in, I put a long dash across the "tip" space, and rewrite the subtotal in the final "total" line. Also, make sure to put a very clear $ sign next to your numbers, so they can't add more digits.

I really need to start walking with cash. I tip, but man it's such a drain to constantly see the option for tipping when I'm ordering take out, when I'm buying something at the bakery, for freaking ice cream! I swear if I see it at the grocery store, I'll nuke the city. And I'm the type of guy who would tip the bagger.

TC, make sure to call up your bank and report the theft, this is unacceptable, just because the server is disgruntled over not getting a $5 tip doesn't mean they have the right to reach into your wallet. I'd go as far as to threaten with a police report.

Unless you specifically use your banks atm you have to pay a 2-4 buck fee.

You have to reload on cash when you run out.

I take $200 out each time I cash my check unless I already have cash on me. I don't pack around that much, just what I need if I'm going out.

Chase Sapphire Preferred. $95 annual fee that is waived the first year. I met the sign-on bonus awarding me a free 50,000 points, which translates to $500. That alone covers the annual fee for 5 years.

$10, $100, $1000 - it doesn't matter. I put that on my card, pay it off on time, and never get hit with any fees. In the 2 years I've had it, I've never paid a cent in interest - all the while, I have 100,000+ points sitting in my bank.

Had those purchases been paid in cash, I'd have zero (0) points in my Chase bank.

It's the APR I'm asking about.

A credit card's interest rate is the price you pay for borrowing money. For credit cards, the interest rates are typically stated as a yearly rate. This is called the annual percentage rate (APR). On most cards, you can avoid paying interest on purchases if you pay your balance in full each month by the due date.

So now I understand that a bit better

It's a chore because it's significantly less secure than a card and can't be used for online payments unless you buy a gift card for the service you're buying something on..

You lose your card or a fraudulent payment happens, you shut it down/call your bank and get your money back, with ease. You lose your cash, that shit is gone and there's nothing you can do about it

Also you don't pay fees to use a credit card wtf.

There are many great banking options that will pay back atm fees. Up your bank game.

Also if a business says "no credit under $X" it's a violation of their credit agreement and you can force the issue if need be.
