Occasionally a double-speed CD-ROM would be nice.

But then Diablo ruined everything by needing a Pentium 90.

I remember when Amigas were the only gaming PCs, and they did it with 7 MHz and floppies.

I remember some fighting games on Amiga that required you to swap floppies between each new fight.

Damn, that honestly would've become kind of annoying, though I had an extra drive which usually helped. The most swapping I recall ever having to do was with Willy Beamish. It still didn't feel quite that ridiculous considering the genre, slower paced adventure game.

I remember installing a Star Wars game (I forget whether it was TIE Fighter or Star Wars Chess) that I actually had to upgrade my computer for because it required an absolutely obscene amount of memory (~44 MB). I also had to configure it so it did not run any background processes except for those necessary for the game in question.

I remember the mild case of terror that came with installing a program from floppies, hoping not to see that garish error screen that indicated a corrupted floppy and signified that the last hour you spent swapping through a set of 47 different floppies was completely wasted.

I remember the phrase "It's now safe to turn off your computer".

The good old days of creating your own boot floppies.
I remember that some games used so much memory so you had to decide if you wanted to load your gamepad or soundcard drivers, and the developers only supported 3-5 soundcards so if you had a different soundcard...

No sound for you!

And just because you managed to start the game didnt mean that you were safe. It could suddenly require more memory after a while, and if you didnt have enough free...

I kind of miss the 5 1/4 floppies, they were fucking giant. And playing games that used a tape player and a 3-ring binder thing with push buttons built into the back - now that was something else.

Or a 6502, in Atari, Commodore, Apple, the most common gaming computers.

Cassette tape drives. Type-in games from computer magazines. And, if you had an extra $600 to spare, a giant step up to 170k single-sided floppies.

The biggest thing I remember was not being able to run Lego Creator because I didn't have a graphics card with a 3D accelerator. True early PC gaming was a bit before my time.

I remember the dark days of loading a game from one floppy then having to insert a second one to actually play the thing.
