Day 2, the last entry in this series was 2008.

Original: Very minimalist compared to the others. One power per CO, 3 COs per color. All the countries fight each other in the story. Maps on the smaller side. Arguably the hardest game of the series.

AW2: Added a lot; super CO powers, each color got a new CO, a few new units. Black hole is now exclusively the enemy, and has 4 of its own COs added. Story missions now allow you to select COs within the color of the country you were at.

AWDS: Each color got another new CO, with 3 new black hole COs. Added skills that you can equip for boosts. Among other units added stealths and black bombs which heavily influence strategies in war room. Reduced charge time for powers, POWERS EVERYWHERE. Included mini games where you drive a unit around and survival maps with time/ turn/ money limitations. Sturm removed in favor of Darth Vader.

Days of Ruin: Full series reboot, all new characters + story. Grimdark edgy world now. Complete balance revamp of units, added bikes and anti tank units to counter old cheese strats (mech / tank swarm). COs now enter units and effect a limited area, power now only grows when things are damaged in said area. Powers generally nerfed, except lol Tabitha. REMOVAL OF WAR ROOM.

I've actually been replaying this series recently. Personally, I thought dual strike was the most fun despite largely being a broken mess. I liked days of ruin and they really needed a reset after gong overboard with DS, but war room being gone, the inability to pick COs in missions, and not getting powers until over halfway through all really held it back.

I'd love a new one, what say you guys?

this kind of statement is always the easy way to identify people who don't actually know what they're doing in this game

co zones are powerful, tactical, and fun as hell to use
expanding your radius to cover the entire map is enough reason for co powers to being really strong

i think that "varying degrees of powerful" is much better design than "this character sucks with half the units in the game so they're borderline unusable"

I was trying really hard to be concise but powers specifically (not d2d) went from stuff like Samurai Spirit / 2 star Gold Rush / tower of power with towers to Sonic Boom and Supply Chain. I did forget Deep Strike being pretty ridiculous too.

Also I know I typed a lot but I specifically said DoR was trying to fix the chaotic un-balance of DS so I'm not sure what you're trying to correct.

anything is toned down after dual strike's complete nonsense
removal of the war room is meh but the war room had so many shitty levels that should have never made it past the famicom days and it got integrated into story as side missions (for some reason)

One of the best handheld game series.

Its probably my favorite strategy RPG of all time. Loved the first one, 2nd one wasnt as good, never really played 3rd, and 4th was probably the best, but i preferred the older art style and like you said it was missing features. Online more than made up for it though imo
