Had a debate with my Catholic friend who said that Catholics are not Christians, as in the Catholic faith is not a Christian faith. I said that every religion that believes in Jesus Christ as the Messiah is a Christian religion and that Catholics just think they're special when they're not.

What do you guys think,? Are Catholics Christians?

Catholicism is the original Christian religion.

While they have a bunch of extraneous rituals, they still follow the teachings of Christ enough to be considered followers of Christ, and therefore Christians.

Their perceptions that the other side is not Muslim is why they engage in warfare against each other.

No, because it isn't worth more time than that. Thousands of books have been written on the subject. There's all kinds of theological and hermeneutical frameworks that are in play because of how vast Christianity is. You could really argue it either way depending on how you are already inclined to think.

Ultimately it is meaningless since all religion is on the decline.

I bet you could have explained yourself with a shorter post than this. Christianity is the belief that Christ is the Messiah and son of God, so how does Catholicism not fall under that definition?

Protestantism was a political movement by German Princes to retain power over the Emperor and Catholic Church.

You basically do whatever you want and pretend the bible says it's cool.

There is a rise in absolute numbers of all major religions, as a consequence of population growth. But because of the internet and the spread of technology there is an undeniable decline in religious fervor and religious influence over governing institutions. That is decline.

I'm sure with time we will see less absolute numbers. With Islam there could already be a huge falling out from the faith but we would never know since apostates are executed in the major Islamic countries.

The Tudors showed this too. the only reason britian in protestant now is cause Henry the 8th wanted a divorce and he pretended to be all into a religious revolution just so he would be able to do it

well in the case of paganism it is honest interest and 99% of pagans are not born into it but choose to become it. it might not be a world overtaking group, but paganism is a rising religion I think that could someday be a bigger force in the world

That's not true at all, you don't know enough about Protestantism if you think that's true.

But it appears you've admitted you're wrong and they're a Christian religion anyways.

Naw I just need to not take people like on their word. I'm clearly far more knowledgeable on the subject than someone who thinks Protestants "do whatever they want" and that it was borne out of a political power grab.
