Yep, more and more people are saying it's a broken neck. Shit sucks, but if you want to look at one positive thing, it wasn't someone in the G1. Takahashi was going to be taking some time off soon anyways.

As bad as it is to see a serious injury like this, I've heard some say that this could turn out to be a blessing in disguise for him and the whole Jr. Heavyweight division.

The guys in that division (especially Hiromu and Will Ospreay) were wrestling at such a fast pace and with such a dangerous style that an injury like this felt totally inevitable. Hopefully this injury serves as a wake-up call to the whole division so they decide to tone it down a bit (by lessening the number of neck bumps they take) for their own well-being. Plus, taking time off to recover from this would leave Hiromu in an interesting spot when he returns. Theoretically, he could put on weight/muscle before his return and just move up to the heavyweight division for a fresh start, where he could get more opportunities and more big-time matches.

But obviously, the most important thing by far is Hiromu's health and well-being. I hope he recovers from this, even if it takes a while for him to get back to the ring.

Mistakes happen all the time, just not nearly as bad as this. Juice broke a bone in his hand a couple weeks ago, and worked last night with a cast on it.

And I agree with @Calwings They need to calm their shit down

Legit breaking your neck is not scripted.

Just because wrestling is an athletic performance doesn't mean there are not risks. People die in wrestling if something goes wrong.

More people die in wrestling than in real sports because in real sports fat people don't throw you on your head and jump on your face all day.

Most wrestlers die young or at least suffer grotesque injuries

Exactly. Ask Stone Cold about his broken neck, or Edge about his career-ending and near-paralyzing neck injury, or Mick Foley about his tooth being lodged in his ear after Undertaker threw him off the top of Hell In A Cell. Scripted matches or not, they're still doing extremely unsafe things that put them at risk for serious injury.

I hope he comes back, Takahashi is awesome.

But he's gonna come back with a totally different ring style, and it always kinda felt IMO he was just in the Jr. Division temporarily and would always move up, so He might be able to just return to a big spot on the Heavyweight Division and be in a better position then he is right now.

But now the Jr. Division is back down to about 4 people though, so I wonder where its going to head now?

Damn that looked like a bad idea from the beginning. Is that a regular move they use? Was he supposed to do a whole flip on his way down?

It looks like a miscommunication there. Takahashi was probably expecting Lee to hang on the whole time, but instead Lee let him go so Takahasi fell on his head.

Here's Kota Ibushi doing the same move, except he hangs on the whole time, which was probably what went wrong

This. Wrestling is scripted but they are still athletes. It takes strength, coordination, practice and skill not to mention some decent acting chops to pull off a lot of the shit they do especially without more injuries like this happening.

Its why anyone who goes wrestling is fake as if that in itself invalidates the whole thing is stupid.

Its also possible to not realize you are injured or how badly until later. Whether its from drunkenness, adrenaline, Head trauma/consussion, drugs, improperly functioning/nonfunctional nerves, some kind of freak coincidence, bizzare odditity of how persons the brain/body is built/works, a monster tolerance for pain etc.

it's not scripted. but somebody will die someday in wrestling because the neck is precious (you can break legs, arms. but the neck has the spinal cord and if that goes we're fucked).

New Japan Pro Wrestling has provided an update on Hiromu Takahashi, who injured his neck during the G1 Special in San Francisco.

The injury occurred during a Phoenix-plex gone wrong from Dragon Lee and NJPWs website reports Hiromu was taken to the hospital after the match.

For those who missed it, the Los Ingobernables de Japon stable member continued to wrestle after hitting the top of his head and reportedly may have collapsed when he walked backstage.

According to NJPW, Takahashi is in a state that can sit and talk with consciousness which sounds like a step in the right direction while undergoing examinations.

No additional information was given, but well report back once more is made available.

People have already died from wrestling. Rey Mysterio is one of the more pretty famous wrestlers to have accidentally killed a person who landed on his neck on the rope.

Yeah the bumps they take in New Japan are crazy. I haven't watched a lot outside of the three Omega vs Okada matches but even then Kenny has some brutal moves. Like the hurracanrana (frankensteiner?) from behind and his snap tiger suplex (I believe that's what it is). I saw Okada land a lot on his neck/shoulders and it just looks painful af

I think it was just an unfortunate whiplash. The guy also maybe didn't brace for it properly? Maybe he was already at risk and the writers didn't know? Who knows

He was suppose to land on the ropes arms stretched out, basically landing in his armpits. Looks like only one arm made it and his throat took a good majority of the impact, crushing his trachea and breaking his neck. This accident wasn't Rey's fault at all. Unfortunately, it was Perro's mistake that cost him his own life in a freak accident.
