I was never a fan of 1 so quit the series 10 years ago. Trying 1 again it's not great but not as bad as I remembered.

As with all sequels, the first games in a series are the hardest to go back to. Years of revisions improve the game (usually).

Most people had issues with 1, but the trilogy of 2/Brotherhood/Revelations are the games most people liked best about the early series.

When it comes to later games, 3 was a major drop-off, but a lot of people really liked 4, because pirates. But both games have a lot of awkward ship battle sequences that aren't necessarily that great if you're not into that sort of thing.

Rogue sort of takes the best parts of ship combat in those games and perfects them, and has an interesting story that might make it the best of the last-gen AC games that don't have Ezio in them.

Unity was generally lambasted for being phenomenally buggy and unfun when it was first released, but they've patched it multiple times since then, and supposedly it's actually a moderately fun game now (I can't say for sure, though, as it's still the only mainline game in the series up to that point I've never played). Syndicate is actually a pretty fun game, but suffered from the negative hype that still lingered from Unity's problems, so a lot of people skipped it.

Origins is almost an entirely different sort of game, and Odyssey seems like it's going to follow in that same vein. I skipped Origins because there didn't seem enough there to really interest me, and I didn't like what they did with the combat mechanic changes (seemingly making it more "Dark Souls-y" and more RPG/level based). But Odyssey is supposedly correcting mistakes made in Origins (making stealth a more viable tactic again while retaining more nuanced combat), while added stronger narrative elements (in a move that I've heard some people describe as "crossing Assassin's Creed with the Witcher and Bioware RPGs), which is tickling me in ways Origins didn't. I'll probably buy it when it comes out, assuming there are no immediate post-launch clusterfucks involving tons of glitches or DLC microtransaction bullshit.

I still need to play through Syndicate and Origins.

Not today, as I want to complete the Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy first (final few platinum relics, after taking a break for several months), and I want to put in time for completing GTA IV, San Andreas, Destiny 2, and Sea of Thieves, as well as the Prey 2017 expansion.

The series tends to have a lot of time wasters such as reaching a certain investment level, training other assassins, and trade missions.

Lot's of the time the optional objectives aren't clearly shown and I wouldn't realize I had missed them until after the mission is completed.

I frequently run up walls I didn't mean to, dive off of building instead of leaping to the next roof top, or get stuck on the side buildings due to running out of a climbable path.

I actually liked the ship combat in 3 more than I did in 4.

Liberation HD has a bug that prevents you from accessing a reward chest in you did something out of the intended order.

The first few games will train you to do side missions and get stronger for the story missions. Later games expect you to get equipment from the story missions before you can successfully do the side stuff.

In earlier titles the skills unlock and side missions became available as you progress in the story. Starting with Unity you purchase skills but also the side missions would be available before you had gotten the skills you needed to complete them such as disguise or lock picking.

Otherwise the games were fun. Still need to finish Syndicate. I've not player Chronicles or Origins yet.

One other thing. Hunting down collectables can be a pain in the @&&. Sometimes they show up on the map when you reveal an area. Sometimes you have to buy a map to reveal their locations. Other times you have to be in proximity of the item to see where it is. This changes from game to game and items will be handled differently in the same game.

i've never really gotten into it cause the twist in the original game bugged me when I found out about it. the whole concept of the series is not what I wish it was

I want to actually be back in time, not just playing old memories.

when I first heard about the first game it sounded really cool. but then the twist made me lose all interest. it ruins the series for me

You rarely HAVE to do any of those things, though. They're usually completely optional and unnecessary, and are only there to provide something extra to those who wish to engage in them.

For instance, I never did a trade mission because I found the mechanic pointless and wasn't invested enough to care, but I actually enjoyed doing assassin training because I liked the thematic narrative idea of rebuilding the assassins (and it was cool getting the reward of being able to order minions to kill people for you).

You don't even have to do 100% sync if you don't want to (and you may not want to, because it's an absolute bitch in certain games). Play the way you like playing, and ignore the parts that don't appeal to you.

Collectibles are also entirely optional in pretty much every game they appear in.

In some games the reward for finding them all is nice, and sometimes it may actually net you additional story goodness, but you never NEED to do any of it.

I liked AC1. AC2 is better in nearly every single way, but I still preferred the setting of AC1.

Never played any others.

I actual just started the series about a month ago.

100%ed AC1 and now I'm doing the same with AC2.

Those are the only two I own, though, so if anyone wants to hook me up with whichever was released next, it's fine by me :)
