Just finished it and wanted to make a topic to say I was completely wrong. This game is everything I want western game design to be, and I sincerely hope other devs are taking notes.

If you have a PS4 and haven't played it, I'd heartily recommend it. This is IMO the game to beat for GotY 2018 and easily among the best games on the console. (The only thing stopping me from saying it's THE best game on the console is Yakuza 0, really.)

Its battle system is less about complex combos and more kind of generic action game-y. The camera now follows over your shoulder so you can't see enemies surrounding you at once, but there are little arrows that tell you when someone is about to attack from somewhere you can't see. The bosses are less visually creative and crazy than previous games in the series. Its story and characters are actually pretty good and feel almost like a different series entirely.

It's clearly taking influence from other series that have nothing to do with GoW, so it's hard to really compare it to the other games.

I would actually say the combat is far better here than in the previous entries in the series. It's a completely different style of game though so it's a bit weird to directly compare them. To put it one way though, God of War combat (while admittedly very fun) has always felt pretty mashy to me, with the challenge on higher difficulties coming from masterful parrying and managing the enemies on the screen. Here, you actually have quite a few things to think about in a fight and are rewarded for using the ultimately sizable set of tools at your disposal in the correct way.

Aside from that combat comparison, this is a completely different - and IMO better - beast. There's a focus on exploration that the series has never had before and the story is actually really great. There's a gear system and actual side quests. There are full blown areas of the map, huge smatterings of lore and even bosses you only experience if you want to. I know some of this might not sound super great - it didn't to me before I played it! I guess all I can do is throw in my two cents that it all works beautifully.

Yeah, I went from having only played about three hours of the first game to getting my first ever Platinum in this one. GOTY for me for sure.

I agree that it's definitely much different, both in gameplay in story. More light RPG elements, open world, and Kratos is a completely different character

but it's not worse. GoW3 is probably still my favorite of the series, but it's also in my like top 3 games of all time, so it's a high bar that the new God of War honestly doesn't fall too short of

it's also MUCH harder than other God of War games if that's your thing

Yea it's really hard to directly compare, but it's a great game. I think I enjoyed it more than the rest of the series though just because the narrative is much better and combat is more difficult.
