Im always amazed how few people know about Gamergate. Its not only the key to understanding so many violent harassment campaigns going on today, its lots of the same people angry about the same stuff using the same playbook.

It's one part ethics in journalism, two parts complaining about SJWs/far left activism in media and university, and three parts talking about whoever's talking about Gamergate now.

If you go to KotakuInAction, the Gamergate subreddit, you'll find topics about all those things.

Topics accusing journalists of being unethical for something like not disclosing that they or someone they are associated with is professionally connected to the topic they're writing about.

Topics complaining about/making fun of sjw students and professors, twitter users, and news/opinion writers.

And topics about anyone who's talking about Gamergate lately. For example, there is a topic on there now talking about Rian Johnson talking about Gamergate. They refer to these incidents as "game dropping" (like name dropping, but for gamergate).

These topics are often in the form of "this public figure/press writer on this social media/article is trying to blame Gamergate for <insert current scandal here>. Or "this guy is repeating lies and misinformation about Gamergate".

then when people started pointing this out they came up with the lie that it was about ethics in gaming journalism
its never been about that and people who say otherwise are lying to you

the prime example of this is when gamergate sent death and rape threats to actress felicia day as well as posting her home address online in the hope that someone would follow through.

Because the jumping-on point for a bunch of people was when a jilted ex-boyfriend ranted about his ex cheating on him, and alleging that she fucked some small-fry reviewer for a fraudulent review on her small-scale indie game. Then 4chan got involved and escalated the situation.

Games journalism has been a shit fight for ages, I agreed before Gamergate and I agree after it happened. And the movement led to reviewers clearly disclosing any deals or whatever, so there's that. But Gamergate did involve a lot of shitheads being shitheads. People were harassed, a lot of pro-Gamergate folks were the "stupid SJW censorship!!" type etc.

No, I think the pivotal point was all the attempts at suppression, shadowbanning, coordinated hit pieces on news sites and that sort of thing.

I never would have ever heard about any of it, if the pushback against it hadn't been so absurdly corrupt and draconian.

And that corruption is still active and as dishonest as ever.

What always bothered me regarding the credibility of Gamergate's concern was that the anger was always directed towards the journalists, and never the evil corporate overlords who actually hold all the power in the industry. Maybe I just missed it, but some indie devs and game journalists aren't really the big baddies here.

Anyone who challenges or criticises or questions: gamergate. And if you're gamergate, you're a bigot, alt-right, nazi, and so on. Just throw a whole handful of refrigerator poetry pejoratives at the problem, anything to own up to your own fuck-up, that someone under the label feminism might be, you know, a sleazy lying asshole.

Here's a bunch of sites and social media personalities showing a completely out of context message that has no evidence it ever even existed, and these personalities are telling you this represents an entire community! And then a bunch of sheep blindly believe it without question.

Shit like that, just makes Gamergate stronger and more supported because it's proving their detractors wrong, and them right. If you really oppose Gamergate, you should probably stop partaking in the exact thing that ensures its staying power.
