Also some toilets splash out, and pissing with the seat down helps prevent that splash from getting on the floor.

frequency of use
i sit down about one in three visits to the bathroom. wife sits down 100% of visits to bathroom it's used more down than up ergo, it should be left down. we close the lid as well --- And when the hourglass has run out, eternity asks you about only one thing: whether you have lived in despair or not. ... I just put both the seat and lid down. The toilet I use nearly all the time has slam-proof hinges anyway, so all I have to do is pull it down slightly and walk away.
