if you haven't restricted your intake before i would start with something like 1500 and step down to 1300, maybe shave off 100 calories every week as you design your meal plans.

This. It'll tell you a good calorie goal to shoot for. It gave me 1600 calories for a goal of losing 2 lbs a week. I lost 75 lbs doing this.

Depends on your calorie out. i.e. exercise.

You need both.

it's difficult for some people to restrict their intake, so they make excuses and go on trendy diets instead.

Removing HFCS and limiting saturated fats in your diet along with limiting the amount of empty calories that you get will go a long way.

definitely agree on saturated fats and hfcs. i noticed once i started counting calories real meals were preferable to empty calories when faced with the choice. once i became aware of how much of a caloric cost was incurred by junk food and sugar i cut it out almost entirely.

No, that would be obesity.

Watch the podcast "barbell shrugged", they invite famous nutritionists and gym experts every week. Very good health science that explains the healthy ways of monitoring calorie deficit and even macros if that's your thing.

Thats a misleading term that should be eradicated. A calorie is simply a unit of energy, the amount required to raise 1g of water by 1 degree C. We measure food in kcals or Calories with a capital C. I know you didnt ask for the lesson but it just aggravated me slightly

It doesn't need to be eliminated at all. Yes, I know that calories are nutrition, but the point is that your diet should be have sources of micronutrients in it and overall be more efficient on what you ingest.

And I don't need a biochemistry or thermodynamics lesson.

I mean, all the term is saying is, stop drinking soda, stop eating sweets, use less butter and oils and that's it.

Awesome is peddling this bizarre nonsense frequently it seems, it's weird. He's talking like everyone has cystic fibrosis and a thyroid disorder.

Counting calories might be destructive for people with eating disorders such as anorexia. It's also not necessarily going to be that effective if you have a rare condition that effects how metabolise food. For everyone else it's a good way to get a handle on how much you eat and to meet your training goals.

As a general point, 1300 calories seems like a really small amount unless you are a small woman and you're not doing any exercise.

"Empty calorie" is just a fitness related buzzword that means "food types that don't have a high nutrient content, like sugar donuts". It's obviously not very sensible for the reason you gave but it sort of makes sense if you squint your eyes a bit.

Who the fuck is talking about undereating

America and much of the western world is suffering from an unprecedented obesity crisis and you're worried about people eating too little

We're talking about not being a fat fuck by keeping an eye on your diet

people in the US are getting fat because of the high fructose corn syrup, artificial food coloring and food oils. trying to lose weight by going very low calorie will make you lose fat, muscle and at the same time damage your liver and thyroid function.

We're not talking about a very low caloric deficit because I've repeatedly implied slight caloric deficit, not starvation mode, but putting that aside

How do you suppose you reverse the obesity of a person without them eating less in some regard? How do you suppose their body can possibly become smaller will maintaining the same amount of energy input and perhaps only a marginal increase in energy output?

Remembering that obesity in itself is a massive health risk, of many times greater a magnitude than marginal thyroid problems
