20th Century Fox Television is reportedly developing the new take on Buffy, which will center on a younger version of the titular character portrayed by Sarah Michelle-Gellar on the 97 series, now played by a black actor.

Casting has not been set for the Buffy reboot. It will reportedly feature a richly diverse cast, and like the original series, boast metaphors for issue facing society today.

Yeah, I can't see this ending well. Granted, since the Buffy franchise is way too damn young for a remake, I guess they'd have to go with something different. Maybe we can get a *buff* Buffy this time... although we all know that Whedon has a fetish for petite, tiny women.

A younger version? Buffy was a 15 year old sophomore in the first season of the original series. She graduated high school at the end of season 3 and then went to college in season 4.

Why would you want to go younger than that? Does anyone really want to see a Slayer in elementary school?

Also, why recast her as black? The original series already had a black Slayer with Kendra who was introduced in season 2. So the original series already did have a diverse cast.

I can't imagine this Buffy remake will actually happen once Disney's purchase of Fox is finalized. Disney isn't dumb enough to do shit like this.

I would have said something similar, but the first Buffy TV show was itself essentially a remake of something else (the original movie). So I'm kind of hesitant to automatically call bullshit on it.

That being said, I'll probably avoid it like the plague, because I assume it's going to pander to modern youth culture, which I loathe because I was only barely in the right youth culture demographic the LAST time around, and everyone born after me is terrible. But it COULD be good, in a hypothetical sort of way.

Would be better following a new slayer earlier in the timeline.

Why a reboot? Just make it an alternate continuity or something, focusing on a different slayer.

Unless Whedon is involved, I'll have nothing to do with it.

It'll probably be some crappy ABC Family show :/

yea it would be cool to have a series set sometime in history. fight demons and monsters in the roman empire maybe? I was a big Hercules and Xena fan back in the day. and this would be cool

Probably a phrasing issue where they meant she'd be younger than she was at the end of the series... although a pre-teen Buffy would be lulz.

Controversy creates cash? Otherwise it's to keep the show from being too close to the original. Charmed was also supposed to reboot with an all-black cast.

Granted, it's a lazy way to differentiate a reboot from the original.

Not really the same thing, though, since it was a different medium (film vs tv) and the film had copious amounts of executive meddling so the creator (who iirc wanted it to be a show all along) pitched it as a show. He already had his creative vision realized at this point and, to some extent, it's still kinda continuing since he was doing comics.

Movie was a decent schlock comedy

TV show was pandering fan-geek trash

After reading into this, Whedon will be an executive producer, and the show runner will be the writer of a ton of good shows like Agents of SHIELD, Alias, Lost and Charmed. I wouldn't mind watching this now

To be fair, they're universally terrible. A reboot might be preferable.
