I want to buy an AR. I'm looking at the Bushmaster XM-15 or the Smith & Wesson M&P15, both around $500.

They'll both do what you need them to do, and you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference, but I would recommend the S&W.
The Smith held up in a melt down test just as well as a $2000 premium model. Long video for reference, you don't have to watch it. --- Snipers don't shoot at paper, they shoot watermelons. https://imgur.com/jo511lG ... Copied to Clipboard!

I have a Bushmaster Carbon 15. It's alright, nothing special but it isn't bad or anything.
I don't shoot it a lot though, it was kind of an impulse buy cause it was on sale. I've heard better things about S&W AR's so if they are the same price I'd go Smith and Wesson. Edit: I should mention that the better things I have heard are about Smith and Wessons customer service, not the AR's themselves. I made it sound more like the AR's are radically better. Bushmasters are fine, great even. But back in the day they did have a problem with quality control and I don't know if that has changed. I'd still say go with the Smith and Wesson but if you do go with the Bushmaster it's not a bad call it might just be a bit more risky. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

theyre a mediocre AR brand now since most of the talent of the past went over to Windham Weaponry (which are quite nice), but then if you just want something to take to the range then they will be good enough. AR's, like 1911's have gotten to the point where pretty much anyone can make something decent. that said get the S&W, better quality thats more than worth the little extra cost.

Also, how's the Springfield AR?very good assuming you dont mind supporting a company who sold gun owners out (or just buy used). has a lot of more quality features in it that youd find in more premium AR's, but then for the cost you can probably get a colt 6920 build kit which is a rifle that would most likely hold up better. ... Ideally I'd only buy from companies that don't donate to the NRA. Probably no such thing, right? --- David Mink. Hero. https://c1.staticflickr.com/7/6043/6337878059_009dd4c4f3_z.jpg ...
