Okay. Theres a kid who is trying to rebel and get away with shit. The cops bust them for doing drugs at the mall. You as a father have two parenting options:

a) catch them, ground them, and do your best to make sure they learn never to it again or there will be consequences
b) catch them, blame their mother, call the cops liars, and say the kid probably maybe didnt do it at all or if they did it isnt important but they didnt but they did but smart people think they didnt

Which scenario is more likely to end with the kid doing it again

There's no need for metaphors. You yourself said Russia tries this shit all the time, meaning past administrations have failed to curb their behavior. If you can't even point to a single example of Russia acting in a new, emboldened manner since Trump, then how is this any different than before?

Previous punishments were not effective deterrents so we should just let them do whatever they want for the rest of time

I am curious to see what "Russian assets" we bombed, since AFAIK we gave them more than enough of a heads up to clear out the majority of stuff from both major targets.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Shayrat_missile_strike#Casualties
Russian military personnel were also present at the airbase at the time it was attacked.

https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/latest-update-syrian-airbase-attacked-us-navy/

Russia literally announced they didn't give a shit and the strikes didn't do anything. If anything it just made America look weak for launching a shitton of missiles and not doing any damage. Why would Russia care about that rofl. Especially since they were given advance notice.

They literally said it was "an act of aggression against a sovereign country violating the norms of international law under a trumped-up pretext", cancelled our MoU with them, and called an emergency session of the UN security council. They said it put us on the cusp of war and said it could have "extremely serious" consequences... and then they did nothing.

Yes. They embarrass the US (well, point out when we embarrass ourselves), but their goal isn't an open armed conflict with the US so what else do you propose they do?

What, are you Cathy Griffin now? I didn't say that, and that was never what this discussion was about. Can I assume you're done trying to argue that they respect us less than before because you still haven't provided a single concrete example of how their behavior has changed compared to previous administrations?

First you try to claim no assets were destroyed. THEN you try to claim Russia's response was indifference. NOW you're basically just agreeing with me that we hit them hard and they backed off because they didn't want a war. They made no attempt to retaliate at all. That is clear evidence that we still command enough respect for them to take us seriously.

I never said assets weren't destroyed, I was asking what your sources were so I could look at the information myself. One article was published before any real information was even released so I don't see the purpose of. The Wikipedia article mostly contains information that the Russian MOD published that just talks about how some planes that weren't even in service got destroyed.

Youre asking for proof that they respect us less. Im telling you that assuming a president giving them cart blanche to do whatever they want and outright excusing their biggest transgression in recent memory will lower their respect for us is, like, very basic common sense.

You realize there's like at least three different ways someone could interpret the expression "Russian assets" in this context, right? Which is exactly why I put it in quotation marks (and even did it again).

You're asking me to, with no evidence, believe that Russia has less respect for the US when every indication is that they are acting the same way they always have across multiple past administrations. Come back in a year when they're actually doing shit that they never would have done with past administrations and I'll agree with you. Screen cap this if you want. I'll be glad to admit I was wrong. Until then, all you have is baseless speculation that you would prefer was true because it makes a stronger case for why Trump is bad.

Fine, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt here that you weren't actually trying to deny that it happened but really just asking for evidence. I provided evidence. Is your argument now that you don't like the evidence? Also, are you still arguing that Russia responded with indifference? Did you not like their direct quotes?

Yes, because saying "The US did a shitty thing" and then not taking any further action is probably worse than indifference, it's exploiting a shitty thing.
