Just watched the D&D episodes. This show is doing it's damndest for a while now to make Pierce a completely irredeemable character that brings the whole thing down when he's on screen. Like, wow, we're going from entertaining asshole to "if he doesn't get kicked out soon, then the show is worse for it."

Pierce's character in S2 is bad but it's good for the show. They do some great stuff with it. Once you accept him becoming the show's villain, it's great.

Just make sure to immediately forget how bad he was when S3 starts.

Villain Pierce is strictly worse than unaware asshole Pierce. People complain about Britta's flanderization but Pierce had it wayyy worse. His S1 scenes are still his best by far. Though it's true that he gives the other characters good material to work with later. And they still bring back classic Pierce pretty often, especially in S3 which has some of his best stuff.

I'm curious about the season 3 discourse. When Infirst made the last topic, the first few Community posts insisted that was when it went to shit. But recently people seem to be praising it lest and right. And what about seasons 4 and on are so reviling that everyone hates them?

3 is really good and has some of the best episodes of the series.

4 is when Harmon got fired, and the show really changed a lot after that, even when he came back in 5. But 5 and 6 turned out great I think. It's probably much better on a binge than when you are waiting months for new episodes.

S3 is the peak of the show. They go really hard in on the meta, concept, and parody that's more sprinkled throughout S1 and S2. There's a lot of weird shit done just because they can. I can see that being a major turn off for people, but I think it's fantastic.

There's definitely a drop-off afterwards. The show becomes about trying to be the same kind of weird afterwards, but it can't capture what S3 did. S4 is bad due to no Harmon, plus the cast starts dropping out as well. By S6 there's only 4 of the original 7 main cast members left. Even though 5 and 6 are good, it's not the same.

4 is worth sitting through, it has its moments. Worth watching for Brie Larson's character alone.

Season 3 was my favorite when it came out but I remember a lot of people didn't like it at first. Possibly because it really doubled down on the craziness scale. I think common consensus changed after Season 4, with the original three seasons ranking as the show's "golden years" for everyone.

I say this and even agree, as someone who enjoyed Seasons 5 and 6 (and more of 4 than I expected).

Season 3 is like someone read a wikipedia summary of season 2 and decided to make a season. Season 4 is like someone overheard in a bar the general concept of the show and tried to make a season.

S4 actually does have one legit great episode that was written by Jim Rash aka The Dean (Basic Human Anatomy). It always gets glossed over because the rest of the season is such a trainwreck. If you do skip, do not skip that one.

I'd say watch S4 just for the context it provides to the later seasons (also it's not that long since it's a half-season), but I absolutely would not blame you for skipping it.

god the third season is just the best

honestly the 4th season is just bad. the cast is amazing and funny just by being charming so i guess it's not a total waste of time, but like pxlated said, watching it is just such a clear indicator of how much the showrunner brought in the first three seasons. it's like the show lost it's soul. i guess it might be watching to see the difference.

S4 is definitely the wikipedia season because they constantly rely on previous gags that definitely should not have been brought back.

And yeah the video game episode did not work at all... none of the animated episodes do tbh. I get why they made them but still.

Man, I dunno. I went to 5, and a few episodes in and they've got Abed making blanket statements like "that's how they comfort victims in movies!". It seems so minor, but it's just not the kind of line the writing in this show is supposed to have.

S5 is only somewhat better than 4 imo. It's definitely a recovery season. 6 is really well done though. They're all still very different from the first 3 seasons. That original show never comes back.

I'm rewatching S1 now myself. I had forgotten just how different Pierce was in S1 (also Britta; really not a fan of how her character evolved).

All I remember from S5 is that Jonathan Banks was a great guest star and the Floor is Lava episode.

Oh and Pierce dying off-screen and giving everyone semen which honestly might be the weirdest thing in the show for multiple reasons.

Arrested Development is so highly revered because a lot of the jokes are recurring, many have set ups way in advance of the episode with the joke payoff, etc.
