I just beat it for the first time. I feel the developers gave up halfway. Talk about horrid level design.

Is this the one with the wonky level requirements asking you to play each level a handful of times or was that III?

That's III. Seemed like an attempt to broaden the game's scope but I gave up partway through replaying it. Disliking II is like disliking Yoshi's Island... except I can kind of see that with how unforgiving that game is. 100% collectibles is just evil.

Worse. Not only do you have to repeat a level to get the treasure you may have missed, but the level design just begs repeating. Got hit by a power at the end of an obstacle? Fall off and restart the whole thing. Tired of the power? You can't disable it. You have to let it run out of time.

It was basically, "Do it over again: The Game."

Most games do that by having checkpoints and/or limited lives. It's just a different take on it. I think the secret-filled levels are great, and they're mostly just coins so you don't have to find all of them. The treasure minigame is a bit of a pain, though.

In games without maze-like designs, yes. Those with mazes, also yes.

WL2 offered no checkpoints in either. It was about a long, crudely designed obstacle course with a trap at the end sending you back, sometimes several screens, to do it over again.

Bosses were bad, too. When I fought Dunk, the basketball bunny, aiming the ball into the hoop was bad. Despite my aim being the same every time, I got it in 1/4 times.

Finally, Captain Syrup. Get hit by a flame pillar, go back around and start it over again. Honestly, a death and restart would have been more convenient.

I also found the transformations to be more of a pain than they were of any help. Rather than making you feel powerful, like the WL1 hats, they were designed specifically to get through traps and stages. But if you got hit by one by accident, you were forced to let it run out. This was a time-consuming, yet pointless feature.

Wario Land 2 and Wario Land 3 are games that actively hate the player and treat Wario like crap through the whole game. He gets abused, beaten, and knocked around for being a huge bully to the world around him, and the only thing he can really lose is time the player has to invest in him.

They're kinda fascinatingly bad. Or pretty decent depending on who you ask/how much they enjoy Wario being in pain and solving puzzles that just waste your time.

Wario Land 2 was super boring. Gave up not too far into it. Just didn't care for the levels or anything.

Wario Land 3, on the other hand, is fucking incredible. The levels were very clearly designed to utilize all of Wario's transformations and upgrades. It's super easy to figure out where to go thanks to the world map literally telling you which level to go to next, the sense of progression was great, you know how many chests are in each level and which you've got, the levels change between day and night, etc. I love that game.

Wario Land 2 and Wario Land 3 are completely different. Wario Land 3 has a world map with levels connected. You 'complete' a level by getting one of the four treasures. The treasure then affects the world map, having some resultant effect in another level allowing access to that treasure. Rinse and repeat. Each level is constantly evolving so even though you play each level 4 times to get all four treasures, each time you go you typically end up taking drastically different paths through the level. Also, each level is more like an open ended Metroidvania than the weird 'sort of Metroidish but more similar to a traditional side-scroller level' that was Wario Land II. Also, the transformations Wario undergoes upon being damaged are put to way better use and feel more organic. Everything about the game is just better.

Wario Land 4 is fun so far. Unless it does something stupid to ruin the game halfway through, I'm really enjoying it so far.

One other thing that lead me to the game was its inclusion on the 3DS Ambassador Program. Nintendo released a number of their best GBA games, like Sacred Stones and Minish Cap. To include the title had me curious. Yet, I figured I'd go in.

Art style and animation are superb, even for a first-year GBA game. Music's nice, too. But the controls and level design are already a major step-up from WL2. It feels polished, not rushed.

Metroid II never had much of a soundtrack to begin with. I replayed the game less than a year ago and can confirm this.

That said, I like Metroid: Samus Returns' music. It was nice to hear Brinstar Red Soil again.
