For real? Is this really a huge phenomenon? In my experience with online gaming since the days of StarCraft and even to this day with females, dudes have always been a bitch White knight to them. You even see it on online gaming forums, even here. Dudes becomes such beta cucks for female gamers so I'm literally confused where this wave of women hating from male gamers is coming from.

I always took it as equating "gamers" with general internet people. Lots of overlap naturally, but I dont think this is a gamer specific issue.

Gaming has always had people in it who would shit talk and insult both men and women players be it for fun, raging because they lost or getting butthurt others aren't playing the 'right way'. Those who've been into the scene since it was niche usually know not to give these idiots the time of day (or are like me and give them a little poke back for a giggle). Now that gaming isn't niche anymore, there's been an influx of people who aren't used to those types of players and don't know how to deal with them. Add on the rise of the Chan culture of being a tosser everyday and everywhere for the lulz so those types of players are more rampant than before and you've got the perfect conditions for this kind of shitstorm. Problem is, for whatever reason, most people just ignore the shit being flung at male players and focus on the the shit being flung at female players to prop up that 'hate and abuse women' narrative.

1. not every male gamer is part of gamergate. the media likes to exaggerate the actual membership

2. gamegate was supposed to be about fixing ethics in the game industry and journalism about games. it got hijacked by a bigot minority who then got blown up by the media thanks to point number 1, above

I have a cousin who is a player. He also says insults can work. I think the issue is that "nice guys" have no game, so when they try to imitate these tactics, they don't do it properly and they fail in the most embarrassing way.
