I don't think deleting system32 actually does anything, like Windows has an autobackup that kicks in right away, iirc.

Most of the stuff it needs in order to run is loaded from that folder upon startup. You won't encounter problems until you restart the machine.

Mind you - all that does is corrupt the operating system; it doesn't damage the physical hardware in anyway. Reinstall the OS and your computer is working again.

I believe there's a service that will prevent accidental deletions. Disable the service, the protections go away.

There's probably a way to disable this, but if you just deleted system32, like it suggested he did, it wouldn't do anything.

It's write protected, so you just need to do it as Admin. There's no special service. In addition you can't delete anything currently in use. But whatever you do manage to delete will corrupt your os.

That said, Windows recovery from a bootable USB can replace the files.

Is this the case with older installations of Windows? Like XP and 7?

I think anything Vista and up will do it but you need the stick to boot with the same version as your current os. (7 for 7 etc)

Idk, maybe things have changed. I remember deliberately trying this back in the day and it would simply instantly replace any file that was deleted.

Right, but the downtime incurred is money that can't be recovered.

If he really wanted to fuck with them he could've had the files on their machines get uploaded to the cloud in a small background process. And then he could've left the disk spinning so that it'd degrade and break much sooner than expected.

So, a scrub on a computer can do something the FBI apparently couldn't do in their investigations of the Parkland shooter?

Same. Because in order for that to happen, the scammers would have to press charges, and thus reveal their identities, meaning they get caught.

Or maybe the FBI was able to get everything it wanted and simply didn't say anything because they're tracking a terrorist cell or some shit.
