I have a few mods installed on the advice of a friend, including the big-ass sound and graphics overhaul and something to make leveling less grindy.

I just uninstalled it. I'm sorry, I tried, but I simply can't play with a keyboard. My fingers don't work like that.

A much less accessible game than Skyrim, but a much more rewarding experience if you stick with it.

Just don't pick alchemy as a major or minor skill. I probably added at least 10 hours to my playtime because of this helpful, yet tedious skill, whose frustration outweighs its usefulness.

unless you abuse the skill to make potions that have enough HP recovery to make you invincible

For a first time player I'd recommend a pure mage with the Atronach birthsign. You'll never look back.

Alchemy is great for the infinite stack exploit but that's later level stuff.

I always play Khajiit but you might want to go Man or Mer; Beast races have a weird waddle walk due to their bow legs, and they also can't equip boots.

Don't sweat it, I have issues with mine as well.

Could always try the Xbox version, you just lose the mods that way.

If you want to be a magic user, take Atronach as your sign. If you've played any of the later games this sounds like it would be terrible, but just do it. Morrowind doesn't have passive mana regeneration so the downside is almost nonexistent.

If memory serves, Orcs have the same stride as Men/Mer and can equip boots.

Khajiit and Argonian are a special case cause they mostly (if not exclusively) in the base game as slaves, so the no-boots thing might have just been a simple means of heightening their suffering.

Edit: TC, you can do pure mage with Atronach, a thief with Tower or a warrior with whatever.

If you go physical, bows are too much trouble at low level, stick with long or short blade or hand-to-hand.

Lots of good utility spells for mages so you can't really go wrong in any school, but I'd suggest spreading some physical or dexterity skills in too.

Gonna be honest, I suggested this earlier as a joke. As a first-time player who lost interest in the game sometime around arriving at Ald'Ruhn, taking the Atronach sign was a huge regret, even as a warrior class. I'm a vet of both Oblivion and Skyrim, I should have known better...but I looked up a build faq that suggested Atronach and let myself get talked into it. Even though there's no passive magic regen in Morrowind, there still weren't nearly enough magic-using enemies in the early game to make up for the fact that all my MP had to come from potions, which were bafflingly rare, even for purchase. Pair this with Morrowind's backwards leveling system where skill level determines spellcasting success which makes it harder to level lower skills than higher skills, and I quickly realized that it would be next to impossible to level magic skills on that character.

If I ever get the interest to try Morrowind again, it'd almost be worth it to scrap my character and start fresh just for the sake of fixing this poor choice.

If you use OpenMW (Custom engine that runs Morrowind) it has native controller support.
