Kind of a tough choice. Fire-bending doesn't offer the same kinds of non-combat perks as the others (although lightning bending is cool), so tentatively that's out. Air-bending is also somewhat light on non-combat perks; sure, it has flying, but fire-benders can fly as well.

So that leaves water-bending (which includes ice-bending and blood-bending), which is kinda appealing and has practical non-combat use. However, earth-bending seems the most practical. It has combat use, it can be used to build things, metal-bending can create other objects, and, while you can't fly, earth-benders can travel underground which also offers more effective evasion.

Sure, you can *also* build things with waterbendering, but the best examples involve ice sculptures which isn't as appealing.

Only master firebenders can fly during sozin comet. Whereas airbender gliding seems to be fairly common. Even if you can't actually fly, the air segway ball seems much more useful for basic travelling without causing a bunch of environmental damage.

As for combat, fire seems the weakest since they can only overpower other people whereas everyone else has bullshit cheap tricks like airbending the air out of someone to suffocate them, bloodbending, earth prison, etc.

I don't remember. I know they can boost jump pretty high but the only one I remember actually flying is final boss ozai.

I'd say waterbending has the most uses:
- can change its form between liquid, water vapor, and ice, and control it in any of those forms
- can use it to heal
- can control plantlife
- has bloodbending during a full moon.

Firebenders can also generate lightning, and earthbenders also have sandbending and metalbending. Don't know if airbenders have anything additional.

Bloodbending would be the key for me. Being able to control people and cut off their ability to bend tends to trump just straight damage or utility.

Earth bending. I'd create giant stone dongs all across the world. Occasionally I'd throw a boob, butthole or vag out there just for the sake of variety. But mostly dongs.

Earth: Mining, construction, farming, landscaping, irrigation demolition, quarry work.

Fire: You get to cook and incinerate trash. Don't even consider burning another person alive. Seriously.

Air: You're a mobile air conditioner. Also might as well clean up all the fallen leaves in the yard.

Water: You can fight fires, wash yourself, cut through things with waterjets, make it rain.

Here's another question. How many of the subsets do we get (EX: Waterbending leading to bloodbending) and how skilled are we?

air can take the oxygen out of your lungs and slice into your body. water can bend the water in your body, or drown you.

clearly both are useful for fighting.

As of Korra:

Earth now has the potential for lava bending.

Bloodbending can even be done in broad daylight from someone skilled enough.

Air bending can give you true flight (though only 2 people over thousands of years have managed it).

Tough choices.

Except you have to have water to bend it. So water bending wouldn't be all that helpful in an area stricken by drought. I mean sure, I suppose you could pull it from the water table. But then you're just further depleting an already low resource. Air bending might be better if you were powerful enough. Use it to alter air currents and move storm systems into the area to actually bring in that water that is needed.

Even if I can't really do a whole lot with it, fire seems the most fun to me. It'd be great use in the winter here. (Or even the summer, since people here like to crank the AC way up...) I could learn to cook without a stove or a BBQ too.
