The Trump administration says people would drive more and be exposed to increased risk if their cars get better gas mileage, an argument intended to justify freezing Obama-era toughening of fuel standards.

Transportation experts dispute the arguments, contained in a draft of the administrations proposals prepared this summer, excerpts of which were obtained by The Associated Press.

The excerpts also show the administration plans to challenge Californias long-standing authority to enact its own, tougher pollution and fuel standards.

No one can be stupid enough to believe Trump isn't just doing this for Big Oil.... Right?

With that kind of logic, you might as well say that staying in the house will make you safer because you won't get in a car accident that way.

I mean... in a sense, yeah? But it's a huge case of "correlation does not equal causation". Gas guzzlers tend to be bigger and tougher, so as a result of that, they're safer. You build an efficient (or even better, electric) vehicle with the same kind of size and toughness, it'll be just as safe. The safety is not inherently because of their poor mileage. So overall, yeah, pretty dumb claim.

Yeah, but the angle they were going for was "if it costs more to fill your car, less people would drive"

It's incredibly stupid

I see. I mean, in that sense too, I guess it would be safer, again, indirectly, but that's also really stupid. Surely if safety is a concern, it'd make more sense to just... y'kno... require cars to be built to a higher safety standard. Or if that's seen as interfering too much with the free market, then at least provide incentives to produce safer cars. It doesn't have to be something that directly subsidises / requires safety; it could be as simple as an official, highly visible "safety rating" on all vehicles sold, most people will naturally prefer the higher-rated ones.

Now granted this is because I live in this damn state (CA) and experience the bs firsthand but I do believe states shouldn't be able to enact more stringent regulations on emissions than what's federally set.
Because the result of that is the loony assholes in charge over here, all of whom either don't drive or can afford any amount of feel good taxes run rampant and fuck over the rest of us in this state that don't live in liberal la la land.

Being able to say "fuck you we'll do whatever we want." to the federal government is a "right" no state should have.

But that issue is not one that need be decided by the federal government.

And actually that's exactly what most states rights people want
