Predictable double standard.

Twitter suspended conservative commentator Candace Owens on Sunday for imitating New York Times editorial board member Sarah Jeongs anti-white tweets, but restored Owens account access following a backlash on social media.

Owens, the communications director for conservative activist group Turning Points USA, on Saturday sent out a pair of tweets quoting Jeongs anti-white statements which did not earn her a Twitter suspension but swapped out the word white with Jewish and black.

Twitter on Sunday suspended Owens account for 12 hours, citing her tweet about Jewish people as a violation of Twitter rules.

Twitter restored Owens access following a sharp backlash. The social media company chalked up Owens suspension as an error.

Twitter takes reports of violations of the Twitter Rules very seriously, Twitters support team wrote in an email to Owens, who shared it with TheDCNF. After reviewing your account, it looks like we made an error.

This was our mistake and weve apologized to the account owner for the error, a spokeswoman for Twitter told TheDCNF. The spokesperson did not say whether a human content monitor or an algorithm was responsible for suspending Owens account.

Owens objective in sending out the provocative tweets was to demonstrate what she sees as a racial double standard, she told The Daily Caller News Foundation in a phone interview. And she thinks Twitter proved that point beautifully. (RELATED: How The Left Turned Big Tech Into Their Speech Police)

The thing is, I wouldnt have minded if I was locked out, because I actually agree with Twitter that that language is inappropriate, Owens said.

My point in tweeting that and replacing the word with black and Jewish yesterday was to show how different that mentality is when you see it in that context and you see talking about Jewish people and predisposed to burning under the sun or black people saying they should live underground, she said.

Its horrifically racist, but somehow weve gotten to a point in society where its OK to say the exact same thing about white people, and thats problematic.

Twitters regulation of speech is under increased scrutiny after the company was revealed to have suppressed prominent conservatives on the platform, including Republican Reps. Matt Gaetz of Florida, Jim Jordan of Ohio, Mark Meadows of North Carolina and Devin Nunes of California. Then, too, Twitter said its censorship was in error.

Twitter similarly suspended conservative commentator Kathleen McKinley on July 27 for two tweets: one that opposed clearing self-identified transgender persons for military duty and one that tied extreme Muslim beliefs rather than mainstream Muslim beliefs to the practice of honor killings.

Unlike Owens, McKinley has yet to receive an apology from Twitter.

There's no way Vox, NYT and lefty blogs are going to back down after writing all those "shame on the alt right for shaming Jeong" articles. It'd basically amount to acknowledging their own hypocrisy, and we can't have that.

NYT stealth-editing their own "we have a zero tolerance policy for hiring anyone with racist tweets" statement for that previous guy who got fired was pretty rich, though.

The tweets are harsh and colorful, posted in 2014, and are certainly comparable to plenty of internet speech on both the right and left.

Not only are Jeongs tweets old, purposefully taken out of context, and curated with the intent of getting her fired, but her so-called racist rhetoric is simply an imitation of the white, privileged insults hurled at Jeong, her gender, and her race previously.



Written in 2014... And 2013 through 2018.

That's a really long time to write a single joke taken out of context. Also, apparently context matters now.

So you guys really feel we're in the middle of a race war? And that this is some kind of huge "battle"? This has got to be the most mild war I've ever seen, and likely speaks more about generations that grew up playing RPGs believing they were destined to be some kind of great hero tbh.

And NYT should have just canned her when the story broke, doubling down hardly ever works for anything. Though they likely know that any article that has her involvement is likely to be some of their most clicked and viewed material for the year, so I get it from that business side. But still, it's a bad look and something that should have died down already.

EDIT: And Wiki locking her page really isn't that shocking, they tend to do that when stories about public figures break and receive mass edits.
