Dont know about you, but I definitely like the metroidvania style of it better than Citys open world.

Exploring City was a bigger chore than Asylum.

Pointless Catwoman segments.

The story was all over the place and it was granted some major conveniences.

This, the controls were too clunky to work in an open world.

Whoa, wait, Asylum was a Metroidvania style game? How have I not played it yet?

Arkham Asylum was a strong, cohesive piece of work. City felt like a total try-hard game. They tried to cram too much into a small area and make it so impressive that it ended up feeling convoluted and more like a step back in terms of the overall experience.

It's one of the few 3D ones to actually pull it off, and it does so very well.

Personally I found it to be the atmosphere. I loved the atmosphere in Arkham Asylum. The confined spaces were great for Bats. I also love games like Manhunt and Manhunt 2 though so perhaps this isn't a surprise. This isn't to say I didn't enjoy City though. I've enjoyed all the Arkham games but City is one of my least favourites with Origins being at the bottom. After Asylum I actually like Arkham Knight the most.

I only go to play Arkham City. There were some slow spots. But I did like actually seeing another hero show up even if it was brief (I mean there are other heroes in Gotham). The gadgets were useful (once I got acclimated to the quickfire aspect).

Im also told that Arkham asylum looked good, but Rocksteady cleaned up the textures, etc when Arkham City came out.

meaningless openworld

This, the open word of City was so barren and lifeless to me. These was nothing compelling, just some random mobs and Riddler trophies here and there. The environment, atmosphere and pacing of Asylum were so much better than City.

The Riddler Trophies in Asylum were actually fun to collect. Arleen Sorkin, Harley Quinn's original voice actor from Batman: TAS voices her in Asylum. Asylum also seemed to borrow a lot of details of what I think of as "comic book" Batman. By this, I mean the Batsuit didn't look gritty and the boots/gloves weren't ugly like they were in City. Lastly, Asylum's vibe was superior because the setting and story actually made you feel sort of endangered and trapped, despite being Batman with all his gadgets. Minor detail, but I'm pretty sure Batman's character model in Asylum grows some stubble throughout the course of the game as his Batsuit gets damaged. They didn't have that in City...

I like both games equally. They are both great games in their own way.

Asylum had that Metroidvania-like gameplay, City was more polished in some areas like tighter controls and boss battles(one of Asylum's cons were its mediocre bosses IIRC).

Origins and Knight are also great games but are often overlooked because of their certain flaws.

That sums it up for me too. I am not really a fan of open world type games.

They also went way overboard with the Riddler trophies in City too. There were just enough Riddler trophies in Asylum that it doesn't get annoying collecting them, but then City has like five times as many and collecting all of them got really annoying.

Plus, some of the sidequests were really annoying. All the Zsasz phone calls got annoying. The final confrontation with him was good, but all the phone calls you have to go through to get to it was just too annoying.

The political prisoner sidequest was far worse. God, I freaking hated trying to find them all.
