Wind Waker sailing is slow, but honestly the song of the ocean carries sailing so hard. And typically the longer travel you have, the more interest you have in just stopping by something and seeing what's in it, say like... stopping by an island to talk to the fish, or actually see what's on it.

Even if slow, it just feels like an adventure that properly shows you how slow being on a boat is. And like I said, just the song is so much <3

It's fundamentally the same problem I have with OoT. You spend minutes at a time doing literally nothing besides mindlessly moving from point A to point B. Quality music doesn't make up for that.

ehhhh I don't know about completely different. I like Seasons a little more but I like the games just about equally so I just combine them

Like I haven't played most of its successors since the formula of 3D Zelda entries is pretty off base to me but I can't believe so few of them improved on it. Like what I played of Twilight Princess seemed way better. Combat and the boss fights seemed a lot better than the stuff from Ocarina-- I dare say I'd possibly even like it if I bothered to play the whole thing.

Can't even guess at the others since I haven't had a Nintendo console since Gamecube but like what is it about Ocarina that is timeless to most people? Do the later entries have annoying puzzles to get through or worse dungeon design or something? I feel like the gameplay can only go up since Ocarina felt really dumbed down.

I get what youre saying, but I think theres a difference between pure nostalgia and acknowledging a groundbreaking game.

Take Super Mario Bros for example. Not many would say, today, that its the best Mario game, but on a level as compared against its contemporaries it is magical even beyond nostalgia. It redefined a genre, and that definition holds to this day.

I heard a quote recently that stuck with me: Asking what is the best video game ever made is always going to lead to a very subjective response, but on the release day of Super Mario Bros. on September 13, 1985, it was as close to objective as it ever got.

Same with OoT for establishing the language of the 3D adventure. Its framework, built from scratch, is still the standard today. At the time there was NOTHING like it.

I think it has a lot to do with how replayable it is even to this day as well. It was a huge 3D adventure unlike any other as you said.

I think the entry that most benefits from nostslgia, and Im guilty of this as well, is Links Awakening.

I havent played the GB Zeldas in so long, but I reflexively rank it higher than the Oracles and I dont really know why.

Bonus Write Up because dammit, I spent all this time articulating it.

1. Wii: Twilight Princess (November 19, 2006)
I could gush and gush and gush about this game. This was the very first Legend of Zelda game I ever owned. I stood outside for 3 hours in the freezing cold to own my areas first Wii and copy of LoZ Twilight Princess. Unfortunately for me, I had to wait for Christmas to get to play it. Meanwhile, my spoiled af cousin tried to jump out of a car on a highway because her mom couldnt find her a Wii with the game when she found out I had gotten one at the midnight release. She eventually got one with a guide book and made me read the damn guide to her while she played. I wanted nothing more than to finally play this game myself.
The time had finally arrived and I immediately hooked up the Wii (that I had to share with my younger brother) and began to play. No guide, just playing. I was in love. I just felt so immersed in this game immediately. It was dark and foreboding and you could just feel like shit was going down in Hyrule. The dungeons were fun, the double hook shot was amazing, albeit slow, and there was just so much to love for me. I loved collecting the bugs for Tabitha, I loved unlocking the portals and riding across Hyrule Field on Epona, I loved the characters and the dark art style, really I dont think there is anything I dont love about this game. This game is what started me on the journey into LoZ fandom, lead me to the collection I have today. When the HD edition came out, I enjoyed all the small things they added to it, like the secret fishing spot and the mini game with the rolling ball. I just have such fond memories of this game, playing it alongside my older brother who ended up with his own Wii to play on. Ive beaten this game on GCN, Wii and WiiU and I hope to one day get a port for the Switch. I really thought Id have more to say on a game I loved so much, but its definitely more difficult to do a write up on the good than the bad.

i assume the ocean temple is the part you're forced to repeat sections of over and over? yeah i like it too. i've never been one to hate backtracking, and i think the way it's implemented (with the combination of stealth/normal fighting and continued rewards) is pretty clever

if it's some other part, whoops, pretend i just talked about that instead

Phantom Hourglass is a great game

sure, the dungeons are entirely forgettable, but the controls are top tier and the bosses are good

(Spirit Tracks is an abomination though)

Yeah I dunno I never really felt like Ocarina was something particularly groundbreaking. Maybe it was having played more PC games at the time or maybe it was just a lack of appreciation due to not finding the gameplay fun to the point it ruined enjoyment from exploration but yeah.

I kinda see what you're getting at but I think SMB1 still holds up really well today even against newer titles for doing what it aims to do.
