It's always the person. Not everybody is a bad person when they're drunk. Some are funny, some are angry, some fall asleep, some cry.

Who says it's only one or the other, rather than the combination? Someone might be a great person, but turn to shit when drunk. Another might be a c*** normally, but fine when they drink. And when we add other substances into consideration, there are people who might be assholes on some, fine on others; with different substances bringing out bad in different people.

There can certianly be some generalizations - alcohol and meth, for example, tend to bring out the bad in a lot of people. Cannabis, on the other hand, often brings out the good in people who usually are kinda asshole-y. But I don't think any substance can be said to universally cause or not cause problems; only that some have higher (in some cases, MUCH higher) likelihoods of causing problems than others.

I forgot the key word "mainly" in the topic title, but not in the poll. I wanted to start with the assumption that both were partially responsible but effectively ask if one had more impact than the other.

their biology. Alcohol affects people differently.
Some are perfectly fine, others just nicer, more open, others monstesr, it depends on the individual

I guess, purely by virtue of the fact that the substance is the same no matter who consumes it, you could ultimately argue that the person is the bigger contributor. But I really don't think you can seperate the two into seperate factors, even if you assume some degree of overlap.

Alcohol doesn't magically give someone the urge to cheat on their partner or beat their kids; those desires are there, the alcohol just makes them forget those are bad things to do.

What about the opposite? Like if the person is awesome when fucked up but kinda shitty when sober?

The person.

Drugs change a person's brain chemistry so it's a "different' them, but they still choose to drink, etc.

I think people are more likely to attribute that to the substance than the person, for whatever reason.

This ignores the fact that someone could have their first drink ever and be a total asshole. That obviously wouldn't qualify them as an alcoholic.

This makes the most sense to me. If a person has knowledge of how they are likely to react yet choose to partake in changing their brain chemistry the fault still stays with them, rather than the substance.

I love that booze just makes me really sleepy most of the time. I had a gf that would just get real confrontational all the time when she was drunk. I was alway leary of drinking with her, cause I basically knew we would get into a fight when she had a few too many.

Why would this be true with alcohol but not other drugs?
