Under the government guidelines someone is still in an ideal weight if they're between 18.5 24.9BMI. This means someone at 5'10" and 132lbs is within the normal or healthy weight category. Years ago when I hit 140 I looked emaciated and anorexic. I can only imagine what I would have looked like if I hit 132lbs, even though it's considered okay by these guidelines.

Isn't BMI like hilariously outdated at this point?

Bmi is not accurate at all, especially for people who work out.

I think so, not sure if there is even a scale that takes into account the fact that female/male bmi usually operates in different ways.

Very outdated, and doesn't take muscle into consideration at all.

BMI is only useless for people that take working out seriously and have a lot of muscle. All these fatties that hide behind this to discredit it calling themselves obese always makes me laugh.

It's still pretty useful when used in broad strokes to examine the general population

BMI is still 100% terrible though. It doesnt take into account fat vs. muscle and is super basic.

Yeah, I basically am thinking that it's too forgiving. Assuming I wasn't going out of my way to build muscle- at the top of the normal range of this scale I'd be pretty fat, at the bottom I'd be looking malnourished/anorexic.

It's supposed to be a general guide but iirc the sample size they used for creating it didn't even include really tall or short adults and they extrapolated.

It's just a rule of thumb that applies to a general population that doesn't hit the weights hard. It's never meant to compete against going to a lab and getting everything tested for you as an individual. BMI gets a bad rep because so many people are fatter than they think they are.

BMI was always dumb because it's only two variables. Just get your body fat percentage measured
