Anyone who denies that there's a need to repair decades of damage caused by apartheid and proto-apartheid laws that shackled ownership of much of South Africa's productive land to a small white minority (on account of their skin colour), and denied black South Africans the right to own or rent property in huge areas of their own country (on account of their skin colour), is a fool who -- at the most charitable interpretation -- is being wilfully blind, deaf, forgetful, and stupid. What you're seeing now is the legacy of that injustice. Have the balls to at least blame apartheid for creating the problem -- not black South Africans who want the injustice overturned.

Whether confiscation without proper compensation is either a wise or ethical way to go about it is another question. But some redistribution of the land is necessary.

what are you even blabbering around? the people in power stepped down because they acknowledged apartheid was bad. this is basically just stealing land from people who paid for it and giving it to the people who aren't even the native population that lost the land in warfare hundreds of years ago

Every country in Africa was colonized. Every one.

The country that was the least colonized was Ethiopia, which only briefly fell under Italian control in the 1930s and early 1940s. I don't think it had much of a lasting impact on the country.

The most successful country in Sub-Saharan Africa is Botswana, which was a British colony. The British colonies do tend to be ahead of the former colonies of other nations. Colonialism was not a good thing, but some colonists left their colonies in better shape than others.

I tend to draw a distinction between imperial rule and colonization, which I'd describe as permanent settlement.

Under the British, Nigerians had participated in elections to the legislature for thirty-eight years before independence; in Ghana, it was thirty-two years. So these two countries at least had been given some experience in the functioning of democratic government (albeit under colonial tutelage) for quite a number of years before independence. Elsewhere though, it was a different story: whereas the Gold Coast (Ghana) could already boast some sixty lawyers even in the 1920s, Kenya's first African lawyer didn't begin practising his profession until 1956. In Northern Rhodesia (Zambia), only thirty-five Africans had gained higher education by 1959; in Nyasaland (Malawi), the figure was twenty-eight.

Why the difference? Simple. Are you just being deliberately obtuse? Again, the point: while the system lasted black South Africans were denied, by law, the right to own or even rent property in much of their own country; apartheid laws effectively penned the majority of the population into reserves, simply because of the colour of their skin. The present pattern of land ownership in South Africa is a direct consequence of the rigidity of the apartheid system, and dismantling its legacy is going to take time. It's been nearly a quarter of a century since the ANC took power in government, yet this has been its first serious move on the land issue. I think doing it this way is a mistake, but I accept that there's a need for change.
