at some point they thought joining the priesthood would help them suppress their depraved urges with servitude to the lord. :v But instead it just turned out to be an all you can eat buffet for them since they're supplied with all these young impressionable children with unquestioning respect for their religious authority and intentions.

As a result there's this deep vein of corruption in the catholic church filled with old pedos and closeted homosexuals that's going to be impossible to weed out.

I went to a catholic school but since I wasn't catholic myself I was never allowed to be one of the boys who got to wear the dress and hold the candlesticks. it made me feel excluded at the time, but it was probably for the best since those boys always seem to spend extra time in the back of the church... >.>

I think some people have joined priesthood to gain access to children, but I also think some of these priests have become so sexually frustrated over the years that they have resorted to this horrible act. Let's face it: Children are easier to manipulate and they likely won't fight back or may be too innocent to understand what's going on.

It's time the church lets them marry people.

Humans are sexual creatures. It's just what we are. It's stupid to restrict adults having sex with other adults. I firmly believe that only creates issues down the line.

The Bible never mandated a celibate priesthood (or anyone serving the church in an official capacity for that matter). That was an invention of very misguided fools at one of their councils over 800 years ago.

Indeed. If God exists, there's no way he would want this happening. He would want people paired with a partner imo. Keeps more people out of trouble.

Now, obviously, there's always gonna be a bad seed that specifically goes looking for children, but I think we can vastly improve the situation if we let priests and nuns have sex with other adults or marry or whatever.

I think the problem is a fairly universal one: any organization that treats a certain class of its membership (priests in this case) as moral authorities/heroes always establishes them as being above the other members. Giving one person in the group power over others means that when they abuse that power, those below them will tend to be afraid to speak out.

I'm in a dance community and there were some serious allegations that came out a couple years ago against a major figure in the community. When that happened, a LOT of other people finally felt comfortable coming out and stating that they, too, were harmed by this person. It motivated a major community shift towards accountability. But nothing would have happened without the first person to step forward.

Obviously, power dynamics exist, but a social structure that prioritizes responsibility is absolutely critical to mitigate the risk of abuse. The catholic church has long demonstrated they are far more concerned with maintenance of their image rather than protection of those who are abused.

There's always, always going to be abuse, and the abusers' reasons will be numerous. Only one common thread exists: they know that they have the opportunity to act without fear of repercussions. Priests are not criminally insane; their actions are not out of inability to control themselves. These people are making informed choices in response to a set of incentives and a total lack of disincentives.

tbh i think a lot of ppl in the western world get into the priesthood to avoid something. i feel like it's a hard sell in a developed, first world country to ask someone to forgo all romantic relationships and focus solely on religion for the rest of their life, so a lot of the ppl getting into this are ones that would find concepts like being celibate to be lucrative (ex: ppl trying to suppress homosexual, pedophilic, etc urges).

That, and as homosexuality became destigmatized, there was no longer any "need" for them to go into priesthood, leaving a larger proportion of pedo priests, compounded by a severe priest shortage that just leads to diddlers being shuffled around to diddle elsewhere.
