1968, the first year in color! Finally!

Without further ado, here are my brief opinions on the songs. I'll use the current-day score system of 1-8 and 10 and 12, but also a separate 1-5 rating to express my overall appreciation of the song.

[7th/17]
Carlos Mendes Vero
[Portugal]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDCB57_ih7w" data-time="

I like the groovy beat and the carefree vibe. Alas, Carlos sings like he's reading the lyrics off a teleprompter, and those wails deliered with the decrum of a tired but spoiled child... Oh dear.

[11th/17]
Chris Baldo & Sophie Garel Nous vivrons d'amour
[Luxemburg]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZ-88XdFAW8" data-time="

A duett that's analogous to a broth composed of sugar water and two unequal-sized potatoes: sweet, but ultimately unappetizing and short on substance.

[16th/17]
Line & Willy chacun sa chanson
[Monaco]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ll8NNJA3MxY" data-time="

Another duett. It's more lively than Luxemburg's middling attempt, but hardly any more remarkable. Nous vivrons d'amour had a little more variation, but overall, was a poor show, whereas this one at least maintains a decent harmony.

Massiel La, la, la
[Spain]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEfilnmFMlU" data-time="

Energetic and decently melodious, and I must admit that the verses are really good, but this song loses a lot for repeating its title thirty times. Literally! The final 40 seconds, in fact, consist almost solely of la la las. This is the worst and most undeserving Eurovision winner in my book as of yet, and I'm honestly tempted to hate the song.

[4th/17]
Pat McGuigan Chance of a Lifetime
[Ireland]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1qFcgBiWLU" data-time="

Pat has a great voice and performs flawlessly, but unfortunately, his song disappointingly is banal and medicore.

[6th/17]
Wenche Myhre Ein Hoch der Liebe
[Germany]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnDbsHRCkVc" data-time="

It's a merry and energetic contemporary feel-good pop song that I rank to be on the same level UK's entry, but Wenche's high voice doesn't make friends with myy sensitive hearing.

[2nd/17]
Cliff Richard Congratulations
[United Kingdom]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcsbL1ZcQhE" data-time="

It's chuffing Cliff Richards! The hearttrob icon in the UK, second to The Beatles. Anyhow, this has nothing on The Young Ones, but as for an ESC song, it's alright. It's definitely memorable, but feels too much like a processed bubblegum pop song without genuine charm. Also, that strange slow-down/stop it does towards the end makes me raise a eyebrow.

Sergio Endrigo Marianne
[Italy]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGAuMqOB5S8" data-time="

This is actually a better ballad than I recalled it to be. Decent, but not superb. The violins and guitar coexist in an unexpected but pleasant symbiosis.

[13th/17]
Gianni Mascolo Guardando il sole
[Switzerland]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65iMtWFurdk" data-time="

Italy had a lovely but modest ballad, leaving it up to Switzerland to channel the unfettered emotion. I like both, but Guardando il sole is more memorable, and I especially like that instrumental interlude. The little hint of a sobbing Gianni has towards the end is corny, however.

Ronnie Tober Morgen
[Netherlands]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIRKl76BXRU" data-time="

Yes, it's rather one-note, but I feel happy and carefee whle listening to this, and other than its lack of variety, I can't think of any serious fault to attribute to it.

[16th/17]
Kristina Hautala Kun kello ky
[Finland]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ADgVukcSiU" data-time="

Compostion wise, this is more charming, nuanced, and memorable than Germany's counterpart, though Kristina almost does the same mistake as Wenche by almost shrieking her vocals. The ending's alos kinda meh. These factors don't demolish the song, but I guess the ESC judges were harsher than I am. It's a shame, too. Kristina took it so hard, she ended her singing career soon after and, of all things, became a bank clerk.

[3rd/17]
Isabelle Aubret La source
[France]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4rlmiBkuKg" data-time="

Isabelle, who won in 1962 (and looks way older than she should) presents a soft ballad that feels like a modernized medieval/celtic minstrel song. The quaint and cosy ambiance stands in stark contrast with the lyrics, telling the tale of a woman who was raped and killed in the forest by a gang of rowing outlaws. Yikes!

Claude Lombard Quand tu reviendras
[Belgium]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqk8ZOvluhw" data-time="

Whoa... This is mesmerizing and beautful. Ends without the mildest of fanfares, leaving me with an odd senstion of dissatisfaction; I had expected the song to continue on. Nevertheless, this is a very unique song in a genre extremely rare to the ESC.

[13th/17]
Karel Gott Tausend Fenster
[Austria]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtGeIW8J5gc" data-time="

This is so dramatic and powerful, yet gloomy and somber. I like it! Definitely deserved a better finish than 13th.

[13th/17]
Odd Brre Stress
[Norway]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4R7F9mFoaM" data-time="

Relatively hectic, incredibly catchy, has funny lyrics... and I've heard that Norwegians are ashamed of this song. Regardless, I really enjoy this odd and experimental pecularity.

[5th/17]
Claes-Gran Hederstrm Det brjar verka krlek, banne mej
[Sweden]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrAFwIoY_z0" data-time="

In addition to a good (but not great) composition with an infectious melody, the lyrics are fantastic and hilarious. A side note: this song's title might be the first instance of (mild) profanity in ESC, since "banne mej" translates to "damn me," but is comparable to "damn it." Thus, the title more or less translates to "Starting to fell like love, damn it." As a cool curiosity, Claes-Gran recorded an English version.

[7th/17]
Dubrovaki trubaduri Jedan dan
[Yugoslavia]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMyESJ9xuCY" data-time="

It's the third and final medieval-esque song, and it's a massive departure for Yugoslavia, as Jedan dan is a very uplifting and cheerful song. I can imagine this being used in a colorful and optimistic musical, where the heroes of the story confidently and merrilly stroll into town to precipitate joyful and magical things with their presence alone.
