Finally my first of the modern Yakuza games. I wondered if I would ever make it this far. I really enjoyed this one's story and getting to see Majima before how you see him for the rest of the series. I daresay I might have even teared up during the ending scenes. Also while Yakuza 4 and 5 had hints of it, this is the first game I felt to go full Metal Gear with its zaniness. A lot of goofy substories (which they kinda had to be because with all progress tied to money the actual rewards for the quests were lame), a chase involving a helicopter featuring shooting an RPG out of mid-air with handgun and revisiting an idea from Yakuza 2 that there can only be one Dragon which reminds me a lot of THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE SNAKE AND ONE BIG BOSS stuff.

I can also see why this is the first one to really hit mass appeal with the public. They stripped down a lot of the excess features that had been building up over 5 games and completely streamlined the completion list by making the progress incremental and having it constantly pop up to remind you of where you are. One of my big complaints about past games was the completion list progress never reflected the amount of time spent doing them. You could play a minigame for hours just to gain 0.7% while you can go eat at a bunch of restaurants for a quick 10-20%. With how it's presented now I felt progress was more balanced and I never felt I was going long stretches without making some sort of progress on it. Also gaining CP for everything you do on the completion list to slowly improve your not-combat abilities also helped make it feel like you were always progressing.

The new fighting styles were fun and you can see how each of the 3 for both characters eventually integrated into their legend style that they use for the rest of the series. The only one I never really used much was Kiryu's Rush style as it just seemed kinda weak, although I ended up disappointed with his legend style just because it's not as good as it was in past games (especially after he learns the Komaki Tiger Drop. The true star though is Majima's Breaker style as you can you can pretty much demolish all enemies and bosses with that 3xSqaure + Triangle combo forever

I enjoyed all the minigames as well both past and new. The pocket racer stuff was rad and the hostess club management sim was far more enjoyable than it was in 2 and 4. I understand Kiwami 2 uses the same system as 0 for its club management so that's good to hear. I guess Kiryu's real estate stuff wasn't the most exciting stuff in the world, but he wore glasses and got to pose with money like a cool guy so it's okay.

As previously mentioned the substories got a lot goofier in this game compared to previous games with lots of people in ridiculous situations or Kiryu or Majima having to play it straight and try to help them. It's good that they were like this because the rewards seemed very minimal or non-existent. The reward is the good time you had helping those people.

It's hard for me to not say this is the best one I've played so far as the gameplay just continues to improve from game to game and this is the best the story has gotten since 2.

0 > 5 > 2 > 4 > 1 > 3

Kiwami is up next although I probably won't get to it until after Dragon Quest XI. Nothing is going to stop me from playing that game and I don't want to be in the middle of a Yakuza game when it hits.

OH RIGHT TROPHY STUFF. It's the same as it was in Yakuza 3-5. Finish the story on Legend difficulty, get 100% completion list, do the Climax Battles (WHICH WERE PRETTY HARD THIS TIME). There were a few missable trophies as part of the story, but as long as you knew to look out for them they're easy to get. Anyway about to hit the character limit for this post byeeeeee.

I simply had to plat Yakuza 0 because of how fucking incredible it was. The only hard part was having to learn Mahjong which isn't that hard a game once you know what you're doing.

Congrats! I can tell you really enjoyed the game because for how huge that post was you just crammed in trophy talk really quick at the end, ahaha.

Yeah Yakuza 0 is easily one of my favorite games of all time. It's just so damn good. If Yakuza 5 was an explosion of content quantity wise, Yakuza 0 is the game that's just nothing but quality from start to finish. The story is so good, Majima is so fun, the minigames are great, the side stories are hilarious, combat is IMO the best the series has had even including more recent games. Gah it's such a fantastic game.

Btw Rush style isn't super great for random mooks but you can absolutely style all over bosses with it. Kuze in particular is great to fight with it since he also fights with a boxing style and you can duck and weave his stuff and feel like a badass.

I never liked rush. The lack of heat moves and the poor damage just put me off.
