I've only heard the theory that the publishers or whoever just don't want to bother renewing the license(?) for it since it's not making them a profit... or something.

It's a very... unorthodox leveling/battle system for sure

But it's fun if you really like to maximize your party though... but it has random stat ups on level up etc.

I'd say the extra/optional bosses are pretty fun

I've heard it's pretty good, yeah. Story is so-so depending on who you ask, and while the gameplay is really good, they don't explain it well at all and it can be hard to learn the ropes at first.

And for those wondering about differences between 360 and the PC version, the differences are fairly big. Basically, the PC version is an overhaul/fix, and contains a Turbo Mode and NG+ as well.

As to its quality, I hear various things. Some people really hate it, while some really like it and think it's worth a play. I need to play it myself, but overall from what I've heard, I think it'll be average at the worst. I thought it was worth making this topic at any rate, since I think its removal will be a loss.

I did like a playthrough topic of Last Remnant like 1-2 years back. I think some of the posters here commented on my progress a bit.

Btw, I never ended up finishing it lol. I got stuck at this weird fight where it would seem I was dreadfully underpowered. I don't really understand. They had this really poorly explained system that was supposed to scale difficulty depending on how you play, but all it did was create a bunch of situations where people couldn't win if they didn't play it right. I don't mind if it was a big part of the game, but it's something that happens in the background and very vaguely explained if at all

Whether or not it's worth playing, it can be entertaining but most of the time it's kinda... soulless? David is easily the best character though. He's a pretty understanding guy

Goal is to go low level until you reach a quest/area with like 100+ enemies, gather them all up, and chain them into one fight for massive exp/stat gains

That's so dumb. There's no way anybody playing the game normally would've figured it out either.

Oh, it's not necessary to complete the game, mostly just great if you want to do optional bosses

I dunno about TLR but from what I know, in SaGa games with Battle Rank, how it works is the amount of fights you've been in dictate what encounter tables the game uses. So if you're constantly running from fights after actually entering a battle, or go out of your way to try and grind up your stats or spark new moves on trash mobs, you can put yourself into unwinnable situations. And with the grinding part, trying to on trash mobs is ineffective in the first place, since you have much better chance of a stat going up or sparking a new move if you fight a boss or an enemy stronger than you. But if you just fight what comes your way naturally as you explore the game world, trying to dodge enemies on-screen but not sweating it if you don't, you should be able to get through most of the games fine.

From what I've heard from many, to enjoy SaGa games, either you have to enjoy figuring out arcane mechanics on your own, or have to either have someone willing to help you along or keep an open eye on a wiki. And at the very least, in the one entry I've gotten to play extensively which is Romancing SaGa 2, everything gels incredibly well once you figure out how things work.

The only logical reason to bring down an old $10 game is an upcoming $60 remaster.

I like TLR a lot, but I didn't finish it. SaGa games are my favorites.

Story-wise, most of them are lackluster. It's not really their strong suit, and typically you're just let loose in the world free to do whatever you want. There is usually some classic, tropey story about sealed evils and whatnot, but IMO that's not the main focus of SaGa games. TLR is a little more story-heavy, so think maybe SaGa Frontier 2 or Unlimited SaGa in terms of how linear the progression is, rather than something completely open-ended like Romancing SaGa 1/3 or SaGa Frontier 1.
As for atmosphere, I think the games tend to be great. The whole point is that there's a big world you should explore, and do sidequests and so on.

Many SaGa games tend to feel almost unfinished because of the lack of a clear narrative structure. So they're definitely an acquired taste.

SaGa pretty much peaked at Gameboy, give or take RS3 and Saga Frontier.

The DS remakes are a nice place to start. Sadly they're not available legally in English.

Romancing SaGa 2 or SaGa Frontier would be two excellent places to start legally.
