The way everyone says they go to the gym you would think all of society would be ripped or at least in shape, but that isn't the case. The exercise that people actually need to remain healthy can easily be done at home or in the park, etc. for free.

Saying you go to the gym is basically a social status thing nowadays.

Going to the gym doesn't exactly accomplish much when immediately after you hit up the local McD's for a Big Smoke style order.

Going to a well equipped gym can get you in much better shape than you would at a park or at home, without proper equipment, but by no means will do so without a good routine and nutritional discipline.

People put too much stock into "getting ripped" these days

You don't need to be ripped. Just jog a little bit and don't let yourself get fucking out of shape. It's not that hard.

I agree with you to some extent. I would say 90% of gym goers show up, hop on a treadmill or elliptical for maybe 30 minutes at most, and then *maybe* hit a few machines. At most, they are burning a few extra hundred calories a few times a week.

However, a good squat rack and bench with a collection of plates and dumbbells is going to be north of $1000, so I have a gym membership.

You can stay 100% fit without a gym, but it's gonna be really fucking hard to find "natural" weights if you're looking for muscle gain.

If you buy your own, you're basically setting up your own gym.

I used to go to a gym but finally just bought equipment to work out at home. So much more convenient

Craigslist is the way to go for weights/racks, got my entire set up for 300$, easily $1000+ brand new.

lol WW2 was won by guys who did sit ups, push ups, and went for runs.

Gyms are bullshit. If you dont take steroids there's no point. You can work out for 6 months straight, and take a month off and you're back at square one.

Yeah sounds like nonsense to me. I could take a month off, and while Id certainly lose some strength and muscle, Id get it all back in under a month.

Something I havent seen anyone comment on yet is a running track. I live near Chicago, so running outside isnt always feasible in the winter. I seriously hate running on a treadmill, so having a track to run on is a very appealing alternative to me.

Not to mention the space that workout equipment takes up. I just dont have the room at my place to put all of that stuff and put it to use.

Im not going to say Im big, but I am 30 lbs heavier than I was last year and look leaner, so Ive definitely packed some mass.
