It's going to need a LOT more than nostalgia to succeed. Brawlers (see: castle crashers) have added significantly to the core mechanics of the genre and going back to "classic" gameplay is going to be seen as lazy, not retro.

I think people nowadays expect some sort of progression. Either costume, weapon, move unlocks, level ups, etc. People need to believe their gameplay is working towards something. You can't just release an hour-long 2D brawler with no additional content at $60 and expect to succeed.

There's zero chance that a publisher shacked up with TWO developers and being overseen by SEGA is going to release a new game at $10. At the cheapest, It'll be $30-40 which is what Dotemu charged for the Wonder Boy remake.

Mostly the experience system, which neuters the game, but also the useless magic system, the random Battletoads ripoff section, the stupid escort missions, etc. There's probably more, but that's specifically what i remember from playing it years ago
