I have it on good authority that the game sucks, so I don't particularly want to play it, but I just got Berseria from Humble, and the part of my brain that hates playing series out of order is jumping up and down saying I need to be familiar with the world and lore so I can catch all the references and call-forwards.

I don't really like watching video LPs, but if anyone's done a good text/screen-based one that I can read at work, that'd be great. Even just a nicely detailed plot summary would be good.

Yeah, this.

If you're really set on it, you might be better off just watching the anime. Apparently it's supposed to be less bad than the game.

Screenshot LPs have always been so strange to me. Like I've even read some of one and I feel like you don't get even 5% of the experience from them.

Sadly I can't recommend the Zestiria anime because it has fucking MASSIVE Berseria spoilers, otherwise it's easily the better version of the story.

I liked Zestiria (better combat than Berseria imooo) but plot is not its strong suit. Village boy, pure of heart, saves the world. zzz

Where the game shines, aside from combat, is its character interactions -- inn conversations, skits, the little in-battle conversations they have every time they encounter new enemies. I dunno if you can find an LP that includes all that.

Digging deep into the combat system is my favorite thing in every Tales game and I actually can't imagine thinking this. Matter of fact, Zestiria's terribly designed combat is a little more than half of why I dislike it so much, while Berseria IMO has some of the best gameplay in the series!

Berseria technically has better combat, since it's far more strwamlined and refined. But it also becomes way simpler at the same time, and you can pretty easily win every battle by button mashing.

Still a way better game than Zestiria, but the combat was less engaging.

Could be that I'm basing all of my analysis off the highest difficulty in each game, but I actually feel the opposite. In Berseria there's actual meaning in crafting good combos, whereas Zestiria 100% of the time boils down to armatizing to out-stat the enemy and mashing out actual gamebreaking attacks.

It was pretty much the opposite for me. In Berseria I basically out-statted things to win (and Velvet in particular is super OP). Zestiria, even armatizing every batle, was a lot more challenging.

Armitizing is boring as hell and Zestria's camera is AWFULLLLL. Like, there are points in time where the battle camera was so bad that I though it was a bug.

Zesteria is is a joke of a game as a result of all the behind the scenes nonsense and rewrites that occurred during it. Also, the characters are nearly all totally dull and uninteresting, absolutely nothing compared to Berseria which arguably has one of the best jRPG casts, as far as the party goes at least. Zesty seemed pretty solid up front, but the back half is one big clusterfuck of terrible that easily places it as the worst 3D Tales game at best. When I did my playthrough topic a while back there was a turning point in the game where the next 5 hours was me posting every 20 minutes screaming about what the fuck was happening in this dumbass game.

Anime ain't a bad way to go, though.
