What I have in mind is a game that has a standard RPG-style campaign, turn-based battles and whatnot, but when your party members (excluding the main character) die, they die for good, and you lose whatever XP etc. that has been put into them. In return, the game gives you a lot of opportunities to recruit new characters into your party to make sure you're always going at full strength.

Think like, XCom or Fire Emblem without the strategy layer

does something like this exist?

I was gonna say Fire Emblem if you didn't mind strategy RPG's. Other than that I have no idea.

You could kind of do a Nuzlocke Challenge in a Pokmon game, if you don't mind the game NOT doing the "this character died, out" since you have to do it yourself.

Romancing SaGa series

you have two health bars essentially, HP and LP, when you run out of HP your character is unconscious and their LP becomes vulnerable to all attacks, if your character runs out of LP they die for good, your HP is fully healed between every battle but the only way to restore your LP is through very rare healing items

in Romancing SaGa 2 it's a generational story with you playing as the emperor/empress of an empire and if they die or your party is wiped, their powers are passed on to the next chosen emperor/empress, and the rest of your party will pass on their skills to others of their job class but only when you have an automatic generational jump does the game update what skills you can learn by default

Valkyrie profile covenant of the plum

You only get permanent death if you use the plume on a party member then they get a huge power boost for one battle and die afterwards win or lose
You can even kill the children this way

The endings and what characters you recruit depend on the number of times you've used the plume
