I know it's kind of a silly question since each fight is to the death, but is there any real "canon" for who wins each tournament? I know there is a tenuous continuum for Street Fighter, so maybe someone knows this too...

All I can remember is Liu Kang wins MK1.

Only the first game is an actual tournament with a winner. The second was a fraud intended to merge the realms regardless of the winner, and Kitana tipped off the good guys before it could happen. The third game was a full invasion of Earth by Shao Khan, the fourth another invasion by Shinnok. Deadly Alliance had a fake tournament again, but I don't know how many people actually participated. I think Li Mei "won" that, but it was a ruse. Everything else was just more violence.

Then the reboot. Liu Kang won the first and second tournaments.

Raiden sends a message to himself in MK1 and the story proceeds from that past.

I think we're mixing things up here

in MK9, the reboot, Liu Kang wins the Tourney

doesn't rayden accidentally blow him up afterwards?

I assumed when Cera said he won the 2nd one, he was referring to MKX

whats the explanation for him coming back in X

or are yall sayin Rayden went back to MK1 AGAIN

Liu Kang is not alive in X
I may be misunderstanding what Cera meant, but in MK 9 Liu Kang wins the tournament, then defeats Shao Khan later on which he may be saying is the 2nd tournament victory.

Canonically speaking, as previously mentioned, there werent really many tournaments after 2s events. Liu Kang was the victor in both 1 and 2, and I believe canonically was the one to stop Shao Khan and Shinnok in 3 and 4.

Deadly Alliance: Liu Kang and Shao Khan were killed by a team of Shang Tsung and Quan Chi (though Khans death was retconned in the PSP version of Deception) and they succeeded in their plan to resurrect the Dragon King Onaga. This didnt go well for them.

Deception: Raiden, Shang Tsung, and Quan Chi start the game teaming up to try and stop Onaga when they realize what a bad idea resurrecting him was. Raiden then blows himself up in a failed attempt to stop Onaga; he comes back corrupted and turns Liu Kangs rotting corpse into a zombie playable character. I dont remember much about the ending events of Deception beyond Onaga failing to reunite the realms into the original One Being. The story mode takes place before and during the main series, starring new guy Shujinko, who Forrest Gumps his way through MK history while avoiding the actual games, learning special moves from some characters and teaching them to others, all under the guidance of a mysterious voice claiming hes helping save all the worlds. Voice is actually Onaga and the story mode ends about the time Deception proper starts I think?.

Armageddon: Rocks fall, everyone dies. But seriously - this is the Smash Bros. Ultimate of Mortal Kombat. Everyone is here. Pretty much every death across the whole series is either retconned or undone, except for Liu Kang whos still a soulless corpse. Theyre all fighting to be the first to reach the top of a magic pyramid and gain ultimate power, all while former minor character Blaze turns out to be the final boss of the franchise. Canonical end to this is seen in the opening of MK9, where Shao Khan beats the shit out of Raiden so hard he has no choice but to send a message to his past self to try and prevent this future. Story mode is some bullshit about some Edenian wizards kid who wakes up after centuries in stasis and is told his destiny is to save the world from too many powerful fighters putting too much strain on reality. His brother turns out to have woken a few centuries early and went nuts as a result. It doesnt matter though because I doubt well see this version of MKs Armageddon story again (though technically Dagon, the aforementioned crazy brother, and Shujinko, patsy to the Dragon King, should both be out there somewhere doing their thing thanks to the past not being changed far enough back).

I seriously remember his name being Rayden

It has always been Raiden, with the exception of the SNES & Genesis games, which changed it to Rayden. Not sure if it was ever definitively explained why they did this, although the rumor was that Midway wanted to avoid possible copyright lawsuits over the name Raiden, which was used by a Fatal Fury character.

Every arcade version of MK used Raiden as the spelling, and every game in all formats since MK4 has used Raiden. But yes, both spellings have been used.

Liu Kang does die in MK9, but in the MK3 (invasion) period

Sf1:Ryu

SF2:afaik no official winner has ever been given, we just know Akuma comes in at the end and kills Bison

SFIV:I dont think they ever gave an official winner either but probably Ryu judging how Ryu is center stage again

SF3:Alex thanks to Oro beating Ryu, then dropping out afterwards , but not before those 2 knocked out some of the heavy hitters

SFalpha there was no tourney, and sfa1 was non canon iirc, as was SF3NG.

SF3DI was the tourney but SF3TS was them doing their own things again
