Board 8 > Do you ever think about the psychological impact (lack of) siblings had on you?

Just curious about other people's takes on this, because I think about it a lot.

I was the younger of two, and we were only a few years apart so my older sibling played a huge part in shaping my world view and also my self-image. Then later on in life my older sibling was diagnosed with a couple mental illnesses, and well, it just makes me think, ya know?

I wrote my capstone paper as a senior in college about the relationships between siblings and how that effects them psychologically

What were your main takeaways?

Two siblings, but vastly older, so I answered none.

And yes, I think that's different from simply an only child, but closer to that than someone with siblings. Also a difference between having brothers and having sisters.

it's been a long time, so some of the stuff has escaped me for lack of use, but generally, kids are better off with a sibling or two than none, but no better off if there are many, or if the age gaps between siblings are larger than 6ish years

Yes, and I feel like I would've been better off as an only child.

Or I guess alternatively having a second sibling who wasn't awful would've been better too, but money was already tight as it was so that might've been worse for other reasons.

Being an only child was great, but there are definitely habits and mindsets that I feel like are the result of being one, for sure.

Just my Brother who's nearly 8yrs older than me, Didn't meet our half-siblings til I was in my late teens. We get along these a lot better than when we were kids, though he will borrow money now and then but at least he pays it back.

I would've been much more lonely when I was younger without my twin sister. She was pretty much the only person aside from my dad who really encouraged me to follow my dreams and shit. Also the only person who could snap me out of it if I was ever wallowing in self-pity when I got older.
