So, you believe you should be able to buy an Iphone, backward engineer it, and put out an identical product, even calling it an Iphone?

Patents screwed over people with asthma.

They are constantly shown to be not be as effective at "innovation" as companies would lead you to believe.

Encourage monopolization.

Definition of an unfree-market.

As an musician that's put out a few albums, and a published author, copyright is a great thing. My IP stays me IP.

I will say, however, that there should be limitations on it. Like, you can will your IP to one person, and after that it goes into public domain. I'm not a fan of Disney constantly pushing back the date for Mickey, because that character is the precedent for all IP. There comes a time when a public figure/story/song/etc should revert back to the people.

The same theory should apply for drugs and tech and, well, everything.

Huh. I didn't know Pi lives in China. Well, there's one way to find out:
Tiananmen square 1989

There, now if he does live in China he's just been put on a list.

Thank you. I should be more clear, they have a place, but they should be weakened.

Agreed 100%. Blanket copyright is detremental to the human condition.

How do you think it should be changed?

So, patents, copyrights, and trademarks have led to some bad things happening, I won't argue with you on that. But to say they are "among the worst of things" is quite the exaggeration.

Well then you will be pleased to learn that the constitution allows for the government to override any patent that provides something medically necessary to save the lives of citizens. It's rarely exercised, but if something came along that was truly groundbreaking, and the company tries to hold it back too much, the government literally has the power to say "not anymore" and release the patent to the public.

Too bad it never happens. Inhalers were prohibited from having CFC, which really had a negligible impact on the environment, but our good ol' buddies from big pharma lobbied congress to make this ban happen.

To the surprise of no one, they then patented the HFA inhaler that people like myself use, and since then, the prices of inhalers have magically gone up significantly since the number of generic brands went down.
