Have you ever felt like somebody openly resented you for being employed and having money?

What are you saving for!? Ive got rent and kids and debts, and youre saving money!?

Ive had unemployed people give me this line while suggesting that my job (I was in retail at the time) wasnt a real job. That must be the biggest sense of entitlement. I didnt win the lottery, you bum, I earned this by sacrificing my free time to do labor.

Also, Im specifically talking about people who COULD work and choose not to.

I suppose those people were insecure about their own situation and decided to spew garbage to cope at your expense instead of rationally thinking about what they were doing.

Yeah not everyone is good to be around.

People here. A lot of this board are NEETs living in their parents' basement hoping for government handouts.

Posts 2 and 3 sum it right up.

Ive never been shamed in real life for being employed and making money. Its usually people look down on you if youre always broke and cant pull your own weight or afford to do fun things.

No, besides maybe on the internet kinda. The only kind of "that's not a real job" crap I hear is from NEETs or privileged stuck ups on here talking about retail or fast food jobs, but that doesn't apply to me specifically.

The only resentment about my financials I've ever gotten were from people who made more money than me.

Its not that I feel guilty, but it just aggravates me that some people honestly think that its okay to berate somebody for daring to save money.

You know the funniest thing? Nine times out of ten, the ones who act like this have never done me any favors and dont even invite me to do stuff. The incident that made me think about this was some acquaintances who are now panicking and sending group text messages out (and private calls) because the wife got a DWI. Both parents (who are about 40) refuse to work and now expect everybody to be their free taxi service.

I dont even need to ask if its wrong of me to ghost these people.

I don't think anyone's ever openly said shit like that to me, but I surround myself with fellow successful people so we're all in the same boat

I lived in a small town that had a relatively average small median income, as well as went to a predominantly low-income church. My wife and I aren't anywhere near rich, but we made a healthy amount above the median income average. There was always this sense of awkwardness during social gatherings at the church where we discussed what we did. Most of them were blue collar workers in mostly unskilled trades (I'm not talking plumbers or electricians here) and it was just weird when they'd talk about their struggles (mostly unending overtime, bad weather to work outside, super early morning shifts, missing rent one month, etc) that me and my wife just couldn't relate to.

They'd make a comment in jest now and then like "lucky you two don't have to worry about this" but I could sense an undertone of resentment like what are you even doing here. I never even thought about our income disparity until those conversations and those comments.

People think I am a loser because I fully max out my SIMPLE IRA, HSA, ROTH IRA, and throw additional money into index funds/crypto instead of "enjoying my money while I'm young."

My parents especially, they think I need to "grow up" by buying a brand new car (because I drive a 14 year old Toyota Camry), my mother is big on conspicuous spending, she will drop thousands on clothes/shoes and then complain that she can't retire. Maybe if she didn't go on expensive vacations multiple times a year she could.

My girlfriend also thinks I'm a cheap piece of shit because I'd rather cook a cheap nutritious meal at home instead of go out and drop $60 on dinner and drinks.

I view money as time spent at work, the less I spend, the less time wasted in this fucking cubicle. I resent my job so I resent wasteful spending.

Rofl. Ive had a few friends whove gotten DUIs and not one has panicked or asked for money. Kinda goes without saying, you fuck up, its your responsibility to fix it. And youll be riding a bike to work most days of the week.

Sounds like bad company and shitty people.

Honestly I dont even tell people I save money. Just take ~$200 from every check. That plus making enough you still have some money in your account after paying bills and having hobbies will end you up with a decent stash for any shitty times, huge purchases (house, car, moving, etc), or plain invest that $200ish every check (crypto currency, send it to 401k, Roth IRA).

These same people will somehow be baffled when you're able to retire at a decent age.

I got a friend who sometimes berates me for being frugal or not wanting to spend money, calling me cheap. He's the kinda guy who would drop 400 bucks for a new console and his parents have a lot of money.

I'm not rich but I have a nice chunk of money saved up across various accounts/stocks. People call me rich because I don't have to worry about my next paycheck if I get laid off or whatever. Some people say it with a snooty attitude but whatever. They shouldn't have made a bunch of stupid decisions.
