We still have to wait for just as many cars in front of us, with the added bonus of them sometimes not knowing which car was which order.

Its probably to help them get you into line. Lot of times people will see how backed up a drive thru line is and change their mind. Now if it holds twice as many cars for the backed up distance it tricks you. I dunno.

Even if it isn't faster for you, they can get you to order faster which objectively makes people stay in line when they otherwise would not

I do think it allows them to move cars through faster, too, though.

This and it gives the kitchen a head start on getting your order ready, so after you pay and get to the second window you literally just grab it and go.
