When Universal adapted Frankenstein to the silver screen, they borrowed from their earlier silent film The Hunchback of Notre Dame by adding an assistant with kyphosis named Fritz. In the third and fourth films in the series, there was a grave robber named Ygor. Nowhere in the novel or the original film series was there a character with kyphosis named Igor.

Was it because of Young Frankenstein that people came to assume that Frankenstein had an assistant named Igor? "It's pronounced Eye-gor."

It's also kinda funny. The whole point of The Hunchback of Notre Dame was that he was Quasimodo was a human being with a soul; with feelings like everyone else. Yet, in Universal's film library and virtually all general media, the "hunchback" archetype is almost invariably evil.

I'm pretty sure that verse implies Igor is the graverobber, which is why "digging", "coffin-bangers", and "crypt-kicker" are used.

Fun fact: Marty Feldman had a habit of driving when filming ended for the day, because when he got tired or bored he would just sit down and start doing his eye thing until people were laughing too hard to continue.

Oh, but Fritz and Ygor both robbed graves. Maybe that's how they became a composite character.
