they were aware of the danger of something like this happening for years. in the 90's they started trying to move shit out of the place to somewhere else that wasn't a firetrap but the government wouldn't fund them so the relocations were very slow and they never got much done. and now it finally happened and the place went up in flames and you will not believe the shit they lost. literal entire records of dead languages are now gone. and some like 2500 year old egyptian thing. and other shit. it might be the most tragic loss for historical stuff, in the past century or more

Seriously this bothers me because it would have probably been cheap enough with current tech to digitize and back this shit up somewhere on a remote server.

Hopefully they were but if they are 'gone' I assume that's not the case.

No idea, I hope not. The article just reads

"It contained audio recordings of indigenous languages, some of which are no longer spoken; entire tongues went up in flames."

No mention of any backup effort so I guess I'll assume the worst.

So much fear of mortality in here.

Everything goes away eventually. Even the pyramids. Humanity too, most likely. Stop desperately trying to hold on to every little thing in an effort to forget that things end.

Even if we manage to colonize planets that orbit other stars, do you really think we're taking the bulk of human history with us? We didn't even make sure every VHS movie made it to DVD. lol

I'd imagine that in some cases, this could cause irreparable damage to the original text copies. As for the recordings, that's unfortunate that they weren't uploaded to cloud storage.

the recordings were completely lost, they had few or none backups

also take in mind some languages were of oral tradition only, so not everything was transcribed.

it was a huge loss that can't ever be fixed by the government or anyone at all.

they are trying to find people who have pictures of the museum and their pieces so they can create an online museum...but yeah.

No electronic back ups or anything? Yikes, this fire really is a tragedy. I wish these priceless historical artifacts could've been prepared for better but Brazil's government isn't in a very good place right now.

Is that the one that Wikipedia is working to catalogue? IIRC, they were looking for visitors to submit all the photos of the artifacts they had taken in order to create some sort of record of them.

Not one person thought, hey you know it may be a good idea to upload some of this stuff to the internet so that the record of it can be preserved indefinitely.

Seriously how the fuck dont they have any pictures on a simple camera? I barely take pictures myself and even the slightest thing related to history i see, id take my phone out and snap it. And this is a museum that had those works for 25 years? It sounds incredibly stupid to me.

Jpegs and text don't really "expire", and PDFs have proven to be pretty stable.
It's all the bloated wrappers and attempts at interactivity that eventually stop working. That's the whole point of that image.

The people stop paying for the servers, domain goes down and everything vanishes. I see it happen again and again. It's why I always save anything I think I might want to look at again in the future.
