In most settings, healing potions are something you are supposed to drink. Failing that, they tend to be something you pour/slather/etc on the wound itself.

The latter type I could potentially see being used in an IV for an internal injury in a more advanced fantasy setting, but for settings with the former its probably best to just make someone swallow the stuff since that is how it magically works anyway.

In Bioshock you inject yourself with a hypodermic syringe to recover your MP. Thats the only thing that I can think of thats kind of close to what you described.

radaway in fallout games are literal IV packs. not exactly sure how the character is able to use them

(although Beth games always have the problem of eating 100 potatoes and drinking 50 beers in a split second.)

Most games just have them use them without any kind of animation. A game I recently played had the character drink it then drop the bottle so it shattered. That was a nice touch.

If you are talking about basically automatically healing you,

Fallout 4 has an armor effect "Auto Stim"

I mean more literal, like you're in a hospital and there's some sick people and there's IVs for potion and stuff, 'cuz that would be kinda internally realistic

I'm not referring to regenerating health, but rather the aesthetic

normally I think the point of a "potion" is to be imbibed; intravenous is like medicine/science which is generally different from healing magic. but then, a quick google search does find this:

Well, it does somewhat depend on the way potions work, really.

A potion that you literally just pour onto the wound (instead of usually drinking) to magically heal your wounds would make sense to be usable in an IV drip if the injury in question is not on the surface of your body (and in fairness, drinking it might actually still be good if you had a burned throat or damage to your stomach).

If a potion is the type that you drink and it magically heals you, then the IV drip doesn't make much sense, and may even be dangerous to do for reasons similar to how it would be a very bad idea to inject something like apple juice or milk directly into your blood stream.

Naturally, depending on the way potions work in that fantasy setting, you can potentially have both types of potions in existence.

I suppose the idea is this:

-Generic fantasy drinkable potion: Upon drinking imparts an effect. In most games, this effect is instantaneous, so something about the potion basically imparts the magic as soon as it gets inside you (perhaps upon coming into contact with stomach acid, it releases the magic effect through the whole body?). There are types though where the effect is not instantaneous but rather last a while (such as buff potions and flasks and such that last anywhere from a few seconds to a few hours), although these effects do usually START instantly so its still a magical thing rather than a digestion thing.

-Generic fantasy non-drinkable potion: Imparts an effect (typically healing or something like destruction of undead/curses, i.e. holy water) upon coming into contact with someone. Generally be best if applied directly to the site of an injury, but in some settings it only really matters that you put it on your body (in which case, drinking would probably work too, and would limit how much is wasted due to spilling).

"Cannot be used in combat."

Talk about being completely pointless and useless.
