Sometimes when watching TV shows and movies, during the school lunch scenes I wonder if those guys were allowed to leave the lunch room caused they always seemed to just stay there.

So, were you? In my high school in California, our lunch room was outdoors rather than indoors, and most people hung out in the outdoor central courtyard/lawn. I usually just sat on the grass with friends, or played ball in the basketball courts.

note: I'm not asking if you guys were allowed to leave school for lunch during senior year or whatever.

Middle school: cafeteria only
High school: cafeteria and quad

high school: can go where ever, even off school grounds

No. We could eat outside at the various picnic tables or benches. If it rained, then we could eat/sit in the gym. Seniors could leave for lunch if they wanted to, so it was basically grades 7-11 outside.

Yep, but in my senior year, they cut lunch entirely and we could leave school an hour early if we wanted to

This, but at least one school I attended had a court yard that was surrounded by walls on all sides connected to the cafeteria you could go out in. There wasn't much to it, just some tables and concrete.
