they need to stop. I think I read once that potentially if we kept making stronger bombs we might eventually break the planet.

I saw a Doc where they say that huge Nukes are kind of pointless.

Aside from the ground zero area most of it's power gets shot out into space.

Also it's better to have 50 1MT bombs than 1 50MT bomb.

what do you mean, why did the US make the bombs AND USE them?

because both sides wanted to feel like tough guys and ended up killing their youth to demonstrate it.

Just having even 1 nuke go off could start MAD (Mutual Assured Destruction).

So having 50x 1 MT bombs to guard is harder than 1 50 MT bomb.

It also depends on how many targets you want to hit.

But the US has Quality & Quantity while the Russians depended on Quantity with a bit of Quality.

It's theoretically possible, but you'd need one so ridiculously powerful that it'd be unrealistic to make, there'd be no reason to bother making one - not even if your goal was "wipe out everyone", as there'd be much easier ways to achieve that.

The bigger concern is the fallout. As a general rule, bigger bomb = more fallout. It's possible to specifically gear the bomb towards producing a lot of fallout; the flipside is true too though, a bomb can be engineered to have minimal (although not zero) fallout - Tsar Bomba itself was an example of this; despite being the most powerful nuke ever detonated, it released relatively little fallout, due to the design. It was actually an intentional choice - they could have made it twice as powerful, but there would have been a huge amount of fallout if they did.

Yep, that's correct. Bigger is useful up to a point, but eventually, quantity is better.

It's not about me not liking the "facts" you're stating. It's about you wildly spouting off things you think you've heard or that you vaguely remember reading somewhere when historically you haven't had good sources (e.g. when you stated as fact that Hillary and Bill Clinton no longer lived together).

You might have seem some pop sci video out there at some point claiming what you said, but there's not nearly enough nuclear material on Earth to create a bomb to destroy it with our current physical chemistry knowledge. The build up to Tsar Bomba was more of an exercise in engineering than it was an attempt at efficiency.

Iirc, they dialed down the size when they realized the diameter of the blast would be larger than the atmosphere, thus much of the bombs destructive energy would be wasted in space.

Also there is the fact that it would have killed the poor comrades that dropped it.

There was still a significant risk of that even with the size they dialed it down to.

Read once that the U.S. did try to invade Russia. It ended with the U.S. military soldiers freezing to death. Makes sense to drop a bomb with that much power then hide in Siberia.
