With a story that manages to satisfactorily tread the line between high-concept fun and grounded character exploration, Shadow of the Tomb Raider meaningfully wraps up the journey Lara began in 2013 and convincingly leaves her in a place resembling where she was when we were first introduced to her more than 20 years ago.

Lara Croft often throws herself headfirst into the action without seeing the bigger picture. In a way, thats a good a parallel for Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Parts feel rushed with odd scene jumps and some of the gameplay systems feel half-baked. The game has its standout moments, but its also full of unrealized potential.

While it may not have a ton of new features or a gripping story, Shadow of the Tomb Raider improves upon just about every aspect of the previous titles. Its combat is a bit tighter, characters feel more personal, and the locations you visit are more intriguing than ever.

Thankfully, the parts of Tomb Raider that make it really fantastic--uncovering the mystery of ancient ruins, solving impressive challenge tombs, and exploring exotic environments--are still here in Shadow, and they are just as outstanding as they have always been. But the core mechanics that have been with the series for half a decade are starting to show their limitations.

Ill be honest, I never finished 2013. Mostly because my save file corrupted around the part where you try to rescue Sam from the temple and everything explodes/catches fire/etc.

Still, I hope to get back to it eventually!

I mean, I'll play it regardless, but it does sound like my problems with the second game are here too
I never had a real problem with "more of the same", considering Pokemon and Mega Man are my favorite franchies, but it was really painful how similar Rise of the Tomb Raider was to Tomb Raider
Another one that plays exactly like those two...might be a overkill

Looks like this'll be a great $20 game a year from now.

I enjoyed the first game, and thought the second game was decent despite being more of the same, but I'm definitely a little fatigued on the core gameplay loop and don't really care about a lot of the side mission stuff, which means a third game of more of the same doesn't sound particularly interesting.

I didn't finish Rise of the Tomb Raider because it felt too "been there, done that" - and it wasn't as good due to substantially fewer characters to give a damn about. Plus, Ana's betrayal was just plain bad writing, seeing as the player had no attachment to her and therefore could not feel what Lara was feeling in that moment. The story gave me no reason to care about doing the exact same thing. There has to be something that makes me want to go through the same gameplay again. Story is usually the best bet and Rise wasn't doing it for me. And I say that as someone who loved the first one and thought the movie was p. good.

I will likely get this one at Steam's Holiday 2019 sale - 15 months off - for $10-15, if at all. I don't buy many games anymore seeing as I have a crazy backlog >_>

I beat 2013. Didn't finish Rise. I should probably do that before I play this, I imagine, but I don't feel strongly compelled to go back for it.

2013 was legit

Had the sense it would be diminishing returns after that. I'm gonna play this, but it will likely be a Christmas thing.
