...is the purpose of our nominations to "fill in the gaps" between the obvious ones who will be in?

I'm not sure that's ever been answered. I've always operated under the assumption that the big names still need the nominations and its never an issue because once nominations are opened to the general public they get them.

But at the same time I'd be shocked if Mario was kept out because he failed to get enough nominations. Though I don't think that protection would be extended very far - maybe only the Noble Nine - if it even exists at all.

I always nominate Crono regardless.

If nothing else, we have seen in the past, that the NN don't automatically get all the 1-seeds and a 2-seed, assuming a standard bracket.
