Home stretch of medical school...

In other news I may be heading for a divorce as well... My wife has become a very competitive applicant for grad school and the likelihood of coordinating where I match for my training and where she'd prefer to go for grad school isn't favorable. Even though it was the tentative plan all these years, asking her to delay her career like that for four years is a tall order even if it would secure the rest of our future (and my job would let me follow her anywhere after that).

I think the more underlying issue is that merely keeping afloat in medical school put too much of a strain on our relationship over the years. I had to make too many sacrifices along the way and residency won't get any easier in that regard, so I think that frightens her.

I don't know why I'm posting this on CE. It's just a very strange time in my life. Being on the cusp of becoming a doctor has been something I've actively worked on for a decade now. But my wife was a pleasant surprise, giving me the best 6 years of my life. I was so stoked for the future, our future. I was a train on a track, chugging along full speed ahead. Now it's derailed, with no idea where it's headed.

For four years? The physical distance and lack of intimacy will pretty much ensure we drift apart. Especially considering we'd be entering it already somewhat strained. We won't know where I match for training until March, and that's around when she'd know where she'll go next Fall. Since these last 8 months of med school are the least demanding I'll do what I can to try and mend that strain.

My only hope is reconnecting to what we had before med school and a bit of luck in landing in the same city. I really don't see it working any other way at this point, but the odds of the stars aligning like that are...not encouraging.

well yeah, four years. It's not for everyone but it happens to military folks who are deployed to combat zones occasionally so it's not impossible or unheard of.

And I mean if you're strained the time apart could probably help.

You're the best judge of you so do whatever you want, I was just throwing my useless 2 cents in.

It wasn't useless 2 cents. I actually really appreciate your input.

I'm not unwilling either. I just looked it in the sense of my lack of presence in our relationship caused the strain, so long-distance would further that gap. But maybe you're right. Time apart can always reappraise things.

Screens are typically used. The YouTube video I watched didnt mention if the hypnotist was a hypnotherapist or their experience with pain cessation and anesthesia.

Oh you weren't referencing Scrubs, you're actually serious....lol

Yeah it's used in minor surgeries and childbirth.

Why anyone would opt for pseudoscience over anesthesia is beyond me.

Hypnosis has a recognized place in the medical armamentarium and is a useful technique in the treatment of certain illnesses when employed by qualified medical and dental personnel. - American Medical Association

*sigh*

It's contrarian for the sake of being contrarian. You're too focused on "what is possible" and not in the mindset of a physician which is not taking on unnecessary risk when the job can be reliably be done safer with another approach.

It basically seems like more work with a lot more risk just to potentially match the efficacy of a typical anesthesia regimen, but realistically will be less efficacious. Why would anyone ever choose that willingly? If the procedure is minor enough, why even bother with hypnosis considering your article also includes conscious sedation with benzodiazepines, opiates, and nitrous oxide with a "hypnosis" regimen? Lol...

Also nice job posting a review article from 1975 that doesn't provide a realistic mechanism of action, a reliable method of measuring depth of anesthesia with "hypnosis" outside of guessing, or any data on randomized controlled studies evaluating outcomes when compared to standard of care.

If somebody offered hypnosis as an alternative to anesthesia for a surgical procedure that normally requires it I'd nope the fuck out of there. I'd rather take my chances biting a leather strap and taking a couple shots of whiskey like in the 18th century.

TC I can kinda relate to the whole drifting apart thing. My ex husband and I were long distance on and off for years while I was in college and it just didnt work.
We loved each other (well I loved him ) but thats not a cure all.
Best of luck to you and I hope you can find a way to make things work with your wife.

why don't you two go see a marriage counselor and work out the issue that is likely to come up? explain your worries and frustrations and have a third party potentially give you some insight into ways to mitigate problems that long-distance relationships have

I worked at a billing clearinghouse for anesthesia.

Would not recommend, basically everything ends up sent to India to be processed for less while introducing security flaws ahoy.

Hypnosis itself can obviously be used in a variety of contexts, just like many other things.

Then let's see the data. So far all you do is post general pages and try to appeal with things like the APA or the AMA's alleged endorsement of it. Let's see the data that demonstrates improvement in outcome over sham treatment, or better yet, improvement over gold standard for any indication you can think of. I'll be waiting. An appeal to authority doesn't carry any weight when you consider that arms of these organizations are going to offer things outside accepted practice of actual medical professionals. You're confusing the business of medicine with the practice of medicine.

JACKBUTTMOMMY posted...
And it could obviously be used in plenty of medical applications with say those who dont use drugs. Especially anesthetics which can kill.

I don't think I've seen more of an armchair opinion about this topic in my life, lol.

Oh wow, I thought you already matched this year.

For what it's worth, I broke off an engagement 7-8 months before residency started. Medicine puts a shitload of strain on relationships. We dated for 6 yrs and were engaged for 1 of them.

Now I'm dating a former med school classmate who is doing a residency herself, and she actually understands what it's like to be put through the ringer.

You have to align your values. Of course you two have love but "the power of love" only fixes stuff in anime or jrpgs.

You can have feelings and stuff but it won't be much of a relationship with distance. It can work but it'll be a bit complicated.

Yeah I'm an MS4. I know megamanfreakXD matched this year though.

Sorry to hear about your ex, but it sounds like you're in greener pastures now, which is nice. It's been a rocky few weeks for us, and still in a bit of a limbo, but I think we're going to see where the next several months take us.

How's residency going?
