(without reading the article) the central bank of Turkey raised their interest rates by 6.25%, from 17.75% to 24%. raising rates is usually an attempt to limit monetary supply so it is likely a measure meant to fight inflation. --- ... Someone explain what this means, to the layman. Normally, hiking interest is a measure used to counter inflation. The Lira (turkish dolleridoo) is doing very poorly right now (lol Erdogan) but not this badly. This is, like, Weimar Republic territory of economic mismanagement. I guess it's a show of force by the Central Bank to show that Erdogan doesn't control the economy, because a few hours ago he demanded that the bank lower their interest rates. also i heard a month or two back turkey was selling all their US treasuries. Normally owning US debt is good for stabilizing a local currency, so strange move.
