V3 is the most Dangan Ronpa a Dangan Ronpa game could be, so there's that. If you like DR you'd like it, vice versa.

On the flip side I think 999 got the right amount of wackiness, gore, escape games, and mindfuckery the first time. The rest are fine but I'd say only 999 stands well on its own. Well, I suppose the later games (and ports from what I heard from this topic) added quality-of-life features.

ironically I actually bought the first two Danganronpas in the Steam sale yesterday! guess I'll be getting to those sometime vaguely soon.

Yeah as far as stuff similar to Zero Escape, Danganronpa is really the only thing I'd immediately point to outside of Uchikoshi's other work. That's part of why it's so exciting that their creators have come together!

Not DR at all, don't expect anything similar in that. There's a bunch of other stories that touch on similar ideas as Uchikoshi, but they all just take 1 of his small twists and treat it like some super crazy revelation. Like Soma is just "omg if you move your consciousness between bodies is it still you???" and that's it. Most time travel stories are similarly shallow also.

Nier series is probably the only other one that goes into similar depth philosophically. Gameplay is nothing similar but they are must play if you want this kind of narrative.
